What these connectors do (concession / contrast)

These are contrast connectors: you acknowledge a fact/idea, but the main clause still happens.

Aunque = although / even though
A pesar de que = despite the fact that
Por más / por mucho / por poco que = no matter how much / however much
Tanto si... como si... = whether... or...
Incluso si = even if (hypothetical condition)
Y eso que (colloquial) = and the thing is / and that’s despite the fact that

The key decision: Indicative or Subjunctive?

For aunque, a pesar de que and por más que, the mood depends on one question:

Am I presenting it as a real/known fact? → use indicative
Am I treating it as hypothetical, uncertain, or just a concession (“even if…”)? → use subjunctive

Although / Even though: aunque

Subjunctive when the speaker does not commit to the truth (or it’s irrelevant):

Aunque el museo sea moderno, prefiero el barroco. (“Even if it’s modern / even if it may be modern…”)

Indicative when the information is treated as known/established:

Aunque el museo es moderno, prefiero el barroco. (I accept as fact that it is modern.)

Self-check: if you can replace “although” with “even if” in English, you usually need subjunctive in Spanish.

Despite the fact that: a pesar de que

A pesar de que behaves like aunque: indicative for facts, subjunctive for hypothetical/uncertain.

Fact (indicative):

A pesar de que el edificio es de los años 70, la restauración ha respetado su estética original.

Hypothetical / not confirmed (subjunctive):

A pesar de que pueda ser una mentira, prefiero creerle.

Common pitfall: Don’t confuse a pesar de (no verb) with a pesar de que (verb).

No matter how much: por más / por mucho / por poco que

Use this for effort/insistence that does not change the result.

Subjunctive = ongoing/typical attempt (present/future):

Por más que lo analice, no entiendo esa instalación.

Indicative = you refer to a specific past attempt (completed):

Por más que lo analicé, no lo entendí.

Self-check: If you mean “no matter how much I try (from now on / in general)”, choose subjunctive.

Whether... or...: tanto si... como si...

This connector presents two alternatives and the result is the same in both cases.

It normally goes with indicative (you are not evaluating truth, just listing scenarios).

Tanto si te entusiasma la exposición como si te aburre, ven con nosotros.

Tip: Repeat si in the second part: tanto si... como si...

Even if: incluso si

Incluso si is used for a hypothetical condition (“even in the case that…”).

In this unit it’s presented with indicative:

Incluso si la feria es pequeña, puede atraer a grandes coleccionistas.

Practical note: In real Spanish you may also hear incluso si fuera / fuese... for stronger hypotheticals, but for consistency here, stick to the book’s pattern.

Colloquial wrap-up contrast: y eso que

Y eso que adds a surprising contrast, often like “and that’s despite the fact that…”.

It goes with indicative and sounds conversational.

Hizo una obra genial, y eso que no sabía pintar.

Use it when: the first clause is impressive/surprising given the second clause.
