With según and como, Spanish chooses the mood based on one key question:

Am I treating the information / instruction as known (a fact)? → Indicative
Is it not confirmed yet, hypothetical, or still to be decided? → Subjunctive

Think of it as: fact (indicative) vs. depending on what happens / what you say (subjunctive).

Two quick meanings: según vs. como

When to use the indicative (known, already established)

Someone already said it / you already know it / it is presented as real.
You can often replace it with: “as you said / as they explained”.

como + indicativo	Lo hago como dices.	I do it the way you say (known method).

Self-check: if you can naturally add “as you told me”, the indicative will usually feel right.

When to use the subjunctive (not confirmed / not decided yet)

You are waiting for information (confirmation, report, decision).
You are leaving it open: you’ll act depending on what is said/decided.
Often equals English: “whatever you say / depending on what they confirm”.

The most common confusion: present indicative vs. present subjunctive

These pairs look similar, but the meaning changes:

según dices = I treat what you say as known.
según digas = it depends on what you will say / might say (I’m not committing yet).

como dices = known method.
como digas = “however you say” (open instruction; you choose).

Practical decision ladder (fast and reliable)

Ask: Is the clause after según/como a reported fact or a pending instruction/confirmation?
If it’s a fact → choose indicative.
If it’s pending / uncertain / depends on a future input → choose subjunctive.
Test with English:
- "as you said" → indicative
- "whatever you say" / "depending on what they confirm" → subjunctive

What to pay attention to in real conversations

In instructions and planning, Spanish often prefers subjunctive: Hazlo como te diga (I’ll tell you in the moment).
In debriefs and reports, Spanish naturally uses indicative: Lo hicimos como nos indicaron (they already indicated it).
Don’t overthink time: the key is certainty/decision, not the tense itself.
