What mood do you choose after según and como?

With según and como, Spanish uses the mood to show your attitude to the information:

  • Indicative = you treat it as known / real / confirmed.
  • Subjunctive = you treat it as not confirmed (según) or not decided yet (como).

Quick decision: “Do I trust it as a fact?”

  1. Ask: “Am I presenting this as confirmed information?”
  2. If yes → use indicative.
  3. If no / I’m not sure → use subjunctive.

  • Subjunctive when you report it as unverified, rumor-like, or conditional on reality.

“If it’s true that it changed (I’m not sure).” Ajustaremos la reunión según hayan cambiado el horario. We’ll adjust the meeting depending on whether the schedule has (really) changed.

Self-check: If you can add “apparently / allegedly” in English, the subjunctive often fits with según.

Como: indicative vs subjunctive (known method vs open instruction)

  • Indicative = the method is established (routine, habit, already explained).
  • Subjunctive = the method is left to the other person (you’ll adapt to whatever they decide).

“I do it the way you always explain it (known).” Siempre preparo la presentación como tú me lo explicas. I always prepare it the way you explain it to me.
“I’ll do it however you want (not decided).” Organizaré el taller como prefieras. I’ll organize it however you prefer.
“Tell me how, and I’ll follow your instructions.” Haré el check-in y alquilaré la tabla como me indiques. I’ll do it the way you tell me to.

Self-check: If “whatever / however you decide” matches your intention, choose como + subjunctive.

Common pitfalls (and how to fix them)

  • Pitfall: using the indicative because it feels “more factual”.
    Fix: decide based on your certainty, not on the tense.
  • Pitfall: mixing up “source of information” vs “method”.
    Fix:
    • según = according to a source / depending on the situation.
    • como = the way something is done.
  • Pitfall: forcing a literal English translation.
    Fix: focus on the message:
    • según often means “depending on whether …”.
    • como + subjunctive often means “however you want”.
