Algunas palabras forman el plural de manera especial.

(Some words form the plural in a special way.)

Understanding “special” plurals in Spanish

In this unit you see plurals that do not follow the usual pattern (just adding -s or -es to any noun).

Here you work with three ideas:

  • Some words do not change from singular to plural.
  • Some words admit two plural forms (in -s or in -es).
  • Some nouns change to plural and, at the same time, the meaning changes.

Read the sections below step by step. After each part, check if you can say the examples aloud with confidence.

1. Plurals that do not change: virus, crisis…

Some nouns have one single form for singular and plural.

  • virus → el virus / los virus
  • crisis → la crisis / las crisis

They usually end in -s and have more than one syllable.

  • una crisis grave
  • varias crisis graves
  • un virus nuevo
  • muchos virus nuevos

Notice: the article and adjectives show singular or plural, not the noun itself.

Singular Plural
una crisis económica dos crisis económicas
un virus informático varios virus informáticos

Self-check

  • Can you say quickly: “una crisis, dos crisis” without changing the word?
  • Can you mark plural only with the article: la crisis / las crisis?

2. Very short words: possible double plurals

Some very short words (often one syllable) can have two plurals in real use.

  • tostoses / tos
  • gasgases / gas

In everyday language, the plural in -es is more frequent:

  • Preferrable in most contexts: toses, gases
  • Also possible (more technical or collective idea): tos, gas as uncountable plurals in some contexts.

Do not worry too much about these “double plurals”. At B2, it is enough to:

  • Recognise that both exist.
  • Use mainly the regular plural in -es in your own speech: toses, gases.

3. Nouns ending in stressed -í or -ú: two plurals

Many words ending in stressed -í or -ú can form the plural in two ways:

  • with -es
  • with -s

In several cases, -es is more frequent. In others, -s is more frequent.

Singular More frequent plural Alternative
el maniquí los maniquíes los maniquís
el tabú los tabúes los tabús
el champú los champús los champúes
el menú los menús los menúes

How to remember what to use

  • Words often heard in shops, restaurants, daily life (for example menú, champú): use -smenús, champús.
  • Words more “written” or formal (for example tabú, maniquí): use -estabúes, maniquíes.

If you are not sure, choose the plural form that appears in your course book: it will always be correct.

Self-check

  • Can you say: “un champú → dos champús” without hesitating?
  • Can you say: “un tabú → muchos tabúes”?

4. Plurals of letters: vowels and other letters

When you talk about letters themselves (not about words), Spanish adds normal plural endings.

4.1. Vowels: add -es and keep the accent

For vowels, the plural is usually in -es.

Singular Plural Example
la a las aes Faltan varias aes en el informe.
la i las íes Aparecen varias íes incorrectas.

Important:

  • The vowel is written between quotation marks or highlighted in writing.
  • The accent remains where it was: í → íes.

4.2. Other letters: add -s

For consonants, the plural is in -s.

Singular Plural Example
la k las kas Faltan varias kas en la matrícula.
la b las bes Hay varias bes mal escritas.

Typical confusion

  • Do not mix the letter and a word that starts with it.
    • Correct: una b, dos bes.
    • Not: dos b (in normal text).

Self-check

  • Can you explain your own surname in Spanish? (for example: “Tiene dos enes y una a”).

5. When the plural changes the meaning: muralla / murallas, escalera / escaleras

Sometimes plural is not only “more than one”. It can express a different concept.

5.1. muralla vs. murallas

  • la muralla → one specific defensive wall.
    • La muralla del norte está dañada. (one side of the fortification)
  • las murallas → the whole defensive system around a city.
    • Las murallas rodean la ciudad. (the complete set of walls)

5.2. escalera vs. escaleras

  • la escalera → one specific structure you use to go up or down.
    • La escalera del fondo está rota.
  • las escaleras → the area / access between floors, usually in a building.
    • Las escaleras facilitan el acceso a todas las plantas.

The pattern here is semantic: the plural can mean a system, an area or a set of structures, not just “many individual objects”.

Self-check

  • Can you explain in English the difference between “la escalera” and “las escaleras”?
  • Can you write one sentence with each form where the difference is clear?

6. Quick decision guide: what plural should I use?

When you are speaking and you need a plural, ask yourself:

  1. Does the word already end in -s and has more than one syllable?
    • Yes → probably no change (like crisis, virus).
  2. Is it a very short word (one syllable) ending in -s?
    • Yes → prefer plural in -es (gases, toses).
  3. Does it end in stressed -í or -ú?
    • Yes → usually you can form two plurals. Use the one you know from the course:
      • maniquíes, tabúes, menús, champús.
  4. Is it the name of a letter?
    • Vowels → in -es: aes, íes…
    • Other letters → in -s: kas, bes…
  5. Does the plural sound like it refers to a system or area?
    • Then check if the meaning changes, like muralla / murallas, escalera / escaleras.

7. Final self-assessment

Without looking at the tables, can you say the correct plural or singular?

  • la crisis → ?
  • los virus → ?
  • el maniquí → ?
  • el champú → ?
  • la a → ?
  • la k → ?
  • la muralla → ? (meaning of the plural?)
  • la escalera → ? (meaning of the plural?)

If you can answer these quickly, you are ready to use these special plurals confidently in conversation.

  1. Very short words (⇒ monosyllables) have two plural forms (tos ⇒ toses / tos; gas ⇒ gases / gas)
  2. Some words do not change from singular to plural.
  3. Some words form the plural with -s and others with -es.
