Special plurals: virus, crisis, menús...

Plurales especiales: virus, crisis, menús...

Algunas palabras forman el plural de manera especial.

(Some words form the plural in a special way.)

What’s special here: plural forms that don’t follow the “just add -s” instinct

In Spanish, most plurals are straightforward. But some words (often learned/technical or ending in a stressed vowel) behave differently.

This pop-up helps you decide quickly between:

  • no change (same form in singular and plural)
  • add -s
  • add -es
  • plural changes meaning (rare, but important)

Step 1: Words that are invariable (singular = plural)

Some nouns keep exactly the same form in singular and plural.

SingularPluralTypical context
un virusdos virusmedicine, IT, biology
una crisisvarias crisiseconomy, politics, technical issues
  • Agreement still changes in the sentence: La crisis es graveLas crisis son graves.
  • Common mistake (English influence): viruses, crises in Spanish are wrong here.

Step 2: Words ending in a stressed vowel: -s or -es?

Many loanwords or international words end in a stressed vowel (often written with an accent).

The plural can be:

  • -s (very common in everyday usage): menú → menús, champú → champús
  • -es (also correct for some words, often felt as more “formal/standard”): maniquí → maniquíes, tabú → tabúes
EndingPlural patternExamples
stressed vowel (í, ú)often -esmaniquí → maniquíes; tabú → tabúes
stressed vowel (ú)often -smenú → menús; champú → champús

What to pay attention to:

  • Keep the accent: menú → menús, tabú → tabúes.
  • Don’t invent English-looking endings: menues, champúes.

Step 3: Plural of letters (and why it looks “strange”)

When you talk about letters as words (A, Í, K, B), Spanish pluralizes the name of the letter.

SingularPluralExample in context
una ados aesFaltan dos aes en el código.
una ítres íesHe marcado tres íes mal acentuadas.
una kvarias kasLa matrícula tiene dos kas.
una bvarias besHay dos bes mal escritas.
  • Vowels as names often take -es: a → aes, í → íes.
  • Some consonant names pluralize like normal nouns: ka → kas, be → bes.

Step 4: Very short words: two possible plurals

Some monosyllables can have two plural options in real usage.

WordOption AOption BNote
tostosestosBoth exist; choose one style and be consistent.
gasgasesgasgases is very common in technical/scientific contexts.

Practical tip: In professional/technical writing, gases is usually the safest choice.

Step 5: When plural changes meaning (not just “more of the same”)

Rarely, the plural refers to a broader concept or a different unit than the singular.

SingularMeaningPluralMeaning
murallaa specific wallmurallasthe city’s defensive walls/fortifications
escaleraone staircase structureescalerasstairways / the staircase area / access between floors

What to watch: When the plural points to an area/system rather than one object, translation from English can mislead you.

Self-check: how to choose the plural in 10 seconds

  1. Is it “virus/crisis”?no change.
  2. Are you naming letters? → use aes, íes, kas, bes.
  3. Does it end in a stressed vowel (especially í/ú)? → check if it takes -s or -es (common pairs: menús, champús / maniquíes, tabúes).
  4. Is it a very short word (monosyllable)? → some allow two plurals (e.g., gases/gas).
  5. Could the plural mean “the whole system/area”? → watch words like murallas, escaleras.
  1. Very short words (i.e., monosyllables) have two plurals (tos ⇒ toses / tos; gas ⇒ gases / gas).
  2. Some words do not change from singular to plural.
  3. Some words form the plural with -s and others with -es.
