When do these connectors trigger the subjunctive?

Use these time connectors + subjunctive when you refer to an action that is still in the future (not completed yet).

Meaning	Spanish pattern	Typical English equivalent

Habit / repeated fact (general truth)	conector + indicativo	when(ever) / every time…
Past event (already happened)	conector + indicativo	when / as soon as… (in the past)

The core idea: “unknown/unfinished” time = subjunctive

Subjunctive here does not mean “doubt”. It means: the timing is pending.
If the action is scheduled/expected but not done yet, Spanish treats it as “open” → subjunctive.

Compare (same connector, different meaning):

Future: Cuando tenga los resultados, te llamo. (I don’t have them yet.)
Habit: Cuando tengo resultados, los reviso con calma. (This is my routine.)
Past: Cuando tuve los resultados, llamé al especialista. (It already happened.)

Fast connectors (as soon as…) and what they imply

These often introduce an action that happens immediately after another one:

apenas	barely / no sooner than	Apenas me confirmen* el diagnóstico, empezaré el tratamiento.*

Note: apenas is common in formal/professional Spanish and implies “almost immediately”.

“Siempre que” and “mientras”: time + condition

siempre que often means “provided that / as long as” (a condition).
mientras means “while / as long as” (duration in time).

Future / not completed → subjunctive:

Te enviaré el informe siempre que tenga acceso al sistema.
No saldré mientras esté con fiebre.

Habit / factual → indicative:

Siempre que tengo una duda, consulto la guía clínica.
Mientras estoy en la oficina, no contesto llamadas personales.

Avoid these typical mistakes

Don’t use the future tense after these connectors.
- ~~Cuando tendré~~ → Cuando tenga
- ~~En cuanto me dirán~~ → En cuanto me digan
Don’t confuse “en cuanto” with “en cuanto a”.
- En cuanto = as soon as (time): En cuanto llegues…
- En cuanto a = as for (topic): En cuanto a la medicación, hay dos opciones.

A quick self-check (before you speak or write)

Is the action after the connector still in the future?
- Yes → subjunctive: cuando tenga / en cuanto me digan…
- No (habit/past) → indicative: cuando tengo / cuando tuve…
Is it “as for” (= topic)?
- Yes → en cuanto a + noun (no subjunctive trigger by itself).
Do you need a “fast sequence” meaning?
- Use en cuanto / tan pronto como / apenas when something happens immediately after.

They are used with the subjunctive to refer to future actions.
