These connectors introduce a future time clause. In Spanish, that clause uses the present subjunctive (even though it refers to the future).

Subordinate clause (time connector + subjunctive) = the “trigger moment” is not confirmed yet.
Main clause = what will happen after / during it (often future, ir a + infinitive, or an imperative).

When do you use subjunctive vs. indicative with these connectors?

Future / not happened yet → subjunctive

Habitual / general fact (present) → indicative

Past (completed) → indicative
- Cuando me dieron el diagnóstico, empecé el tratamiento.
