Comparativas: el doble de, lo mismo que, no más que...

Hay expresiones para comparar acciones y cantidades en contextos reales, indicando igualdad, diferencia o proporción.

(There are expressions to compare actions and quantities in real-life contexts, indicating equality, difference, or proportion.)

What these expressions do (quick orientation)

  • They compare people, things, prices, time, or amounts.
  • They answer typical questions like: Who the most? Same as? How many/much more?
  • Main choice to make: equality vs more/less vs exclusive limit.

“El/la que más / menos” = “the one who … the most/least”

  • Use it to identify the top/bottom person/thing in a group.
  • Structure: ser + el/la/los/las que + más/menos + verb
  • The article must match the person/thing you refer to.
Correct Marta es la que más recomienda cosmética natural.
Agreement Mario es el que menos se queja del calor.
Common mistake Marta es el que más recomienda… (gender mismatch)
  • Tip: If you can say “the one who…”, this structure works well.
  • Don’t add de before a direct object: recomienda de mascarillas → recomienda mascarillas.

Equality: “lo mismo que” vs “igual que”

  • Both express equality, but they feel slightly different.
lo mismo que Equality of amount / thing / result.
Pago lo mismo que tú. (same amount)
igual que “Just like” / “the same as” in a more general sense (often similarity).
Es igual que el otro tratamiento. (same/similar)
  • Key form: lo mismo que (not lo mismo de).
  • Shortcut: money/quantity → often lo mismo que. Description/comparison → often igual que.

Multipliers: “el doble de”, “tres veces más/menos”, “la mitad”

  • These are for measurable quantities: price, time, dosage, intensity (when treated as measurable).
el doble de + noun + que Dura el doble de tiempo que la sauna.
tres veces más/menos + adj/adv + que Este masaje es tres veces más relajante que el anterior.
la mitad de + noun Usa la mitad de la dosis.
  • Watch this: Spanish normally needs de after el doble when a noun follows:
    • el doble de tiempo, el doble de dinero, el doble de citas
    • el doble tiempo
  • With la mitad, you can also compare:
    • Necesito la mitad (de crema) que normalmente.

“No más que” vs “Nada más que” (easy to confuse)

no más que + number only / just (exclusive limit)
Tenemos no más que cinco citas libres.
nada más que + noun/infinitive nothing but / only (exclusively that thing)
Ofrecemos nada más que productos naturales.
  • Practical difference:
    • no más que = a small quantity (usually with a number).
    • nada más que = exclusivity (and often sounds emphatic: “nothing else”).
  • Form: no más que + number (not no más que de).

Self-check: choose the right pattern in 10 seconds

  1. Top/bottom person in a group? → el/la que más / menos
  2. Same amount/price? → lo mismo que
  3. Same/similar thing? → igual que
  4. Twice / half / X times? → el doble de, la mitad, tres veces más/menos
  5. Only + number available? → no más que + number
  6. Nothing but (exclusively)? → nada más que
