Comparativas: el doble de, lo mismo que, no más que...

Hay expresiones para comparar acciones y cantidades en contextos reales, indicando igualdad, diferencia o proporción.

(There are expressions to compare actions and quantities in real-life contexts, indicating equality, difference, or proportion.)

What these expressions do (quick map)

  • Ranking (superlatives): el/la/los/las que más / menos = “the one(s) who … the most/least”
  • Equality: lo mismo que, igual que = “the same as / like”
  • Proportion: el doble que, la mitad (de), tres veces más/menos = “double / half / three times more/less”
  • Limits / exclusivity: no más que = “only / no more than”; nada más que = “nothing but / only”

1) “El/la que más / menos”: ranking people or things

Use this when you compare several options and identify the top/bottom one.

  • Structure: ser + el/la/los/las que + más/menos + verbo
  • Agreement: el/la/los/las matches the person/thing.
Correct Marta es la que más recomienda la cosmética natural.
Also common De todos, Marta es la que menos se queja.
Avoid Marta es la más que recomienda… (missing la que)

Self-check: Can you add “of all of them” in English? If yes, this structure usually fits.

2) Equality: “lo mismo que” vs “igual que”

  • Lo mismo que = same amount/thing.
    • Yo pago lo mismo que tú.
    • Trabajamos con lo mismo que el año pasado: el mismo presupuesto.
  • Igual que = “just like”, same way/type (often more general).
    • Es igual que el otro tratamiento.
    • Respira igual que antes del ejercicio.

Typical doubt: both can be “the same as” in English. In Spanish, choose:

  • Money/quantity/result: lo mismo que
  • Similarity/“like”: igual que

3) Proportions: “el doble que”, “la mitad (de)”, “tres veces más/menos”

Double cuesta el doble que el otro.
Half Usa la mitad de la dosis. / Usa la mitad (when the context makes it clear).
X times Es tres veces más relajante que el anterior.
  • Key pattern: el doble que + comparison term (not el doble de que).
  • “La mitad” behaves like a noun:
    • la mitad de + noun: la mitad de la dosis
    • alone when obvious: Ponte la mitad y espera.
  • “Tres veces más/menos”: keep más/menos + adjective/adverb.
    • Trabaja dos veces más rápido que antes.

4) “No más que” vs “Nada más que”: only, but not the same “only”

No más que

Meaning: a maximum / limitation (“no more than”, often = “only”).

Tenemos no más que cinco citas libres.
Nada más que

Meaning: exclusivity (“nothing but”).

Ofrecemos nada más que productos naturales.
  • Test:
    • If you mean “at most X” → no más que
    • If you mean “nothing except X” → nada más que
  • Tone note: no más que can sound slightly emphatic (“only three!”), useful in customer service situations.

5) Quick decision guide (choose in 5 seconds)

  1. Is it about the top/bottom person/thing in a group? → el/la que más/menos
  2. Is it about same amount/price/result? → lo mismo que
  3. Is it about similarity / “like”? → igual que
  4. Is it a proportion (2x, half, 3x)? → el doble que / la mitad (de) / X veces más/menos
  5. Do you mean a limit or exclusivity?
    • limit → no más que
    • exclusivity → nada más que
