What the condicional compuesto is really for

Use it to talk about a past situation that did not happen (a “different past”). In English it often matches “would have + past participle”.

Unreal past result: Con más tiempo, habríamos terminado el informe.
Regret / missed opportunity: Habría llamado antes.
Cause–effect in the past: Si hubieran enviado los datos, habríamos podido validar el modelo.

How to build it (fast and reliably)

Formula	haber (conditional) + past participle

Haber (key forms)	yo habría · tú habrías · él/ella habría · nosotros habríamos · vosotros habríais · ellos habrían

Tip: If you can say it in English as “would have done/seen/decided…”, you probably need habría + participio.

The most common pattern: “Si…” (unreal past condition)

This is the B2 structure you’ll use all the time in professional contexts (post‑mortems, audits, retrospectives):

Si + past condition	pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo si + hubiera/hubiera + participio
Main clause: past result	condicional compuesto habría/habríamos + participio
Example	Si hubiéramos negociado mejor, habríamos reducido costes.

Meaning check: both parts are “alternative past” (not reality).
Very common mistake: ~~Si habríamos negociado…~~ → after si, Spanish does not use the conditional.

When you don’t need “Si”: regret, criticism, advice

To express what you (or someone) would have liked / should have done:

Wish / intention not fulfilled: Habría preferido una reunión más breve.
Professional criticism (soft but clear): Habríais podido avisar con antelación.
“Should have”: Habrías debido documentar la decisión.

Note: With deber you’ll often see habría/habrías debido + infinitive (not participle after debido).

Reported speech: “dijo que…” (what was expected/claimed)

In indirect speech, Spanish often uses the compound conditional to report something about the past that was said, expected, or not confirmed at that moment.

El director dijo que la agencia habría empezado en junio.

Meaning: “he said it had started / would have started (according to him)” — you present it as information, not as a guaranteed fact.

Past participles: the few that still trip people up

Most are regular (-ado / -ido). These are high-frequency in business Spanish:

Self-check: choose the right “past unreal” structure

Is it a past result that didn’t happen? → use habría + participio.
Is there a “if” condition? → after si use hubiera/hubieran + participio (not conditional).
Are you reporting what someone said/assumed? → dijo que + habría + participio.

Mini test: If you can naturally translate your sentence as “If we had…, we would have…”, you’re in the right grammar area.

It is formed with haber in the conditional + past participle.
