What Futur I is really doing (and when you need it)

In German, Futur I is built with werden + infinitive.

• It can mean a plain future: tomorrow / next week / later.
• It is also common for a prediction/assumption: “He’ll probably be…” (often with wohl, bestimmt).

Important: In everyday German, people often use present tense + a time word for future plans. Futur I is still correct and very useful when you want to sound clear, formal, or predictive.

The core structure: “werden” in position 2 + infinitive at the end

• werden is the only conjugated verb.
• The main verb stays in the infinitive and goes to the very end: sein, stehen, kaufen, sitzen …

How to build it step by step (self-check routine)

1. Pick the verb you need: sein (to be) / stehen (to stand) / etc.
2. Conjugate “werden” for the subject: ich werde, du wirst, er/sie/es wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie/Sie werden.
3. Put the infinitive at the end of the sentence.
4. Check: Is there a time word? If yes, it can go first and then werden stays in position 2.

Typical mistakes (and quick fixes)

“sein” and “stehen” in Futur I: what to pay attention to

• sein is often used for location/state: im Büro, zu Hause, in Berlin, pünktlich.
• stehen is physical position: vor der Tür, am Bahnhof, ganz vorne.
• In Futur I, both stay regular: werden + sein / werden + stehen.

Word order with time phrases (so you don’t lose position 2)

If you start with a time phrase, werden still stays in position 2.

Mini checklist: can you audit your own sentence?

• Do I have werden conjugated correctly for the subject?
• Is the other verb in the infinitive (sein/stehen/kaufen…)?
• Is that infinitive at the end of the clause?
• If the sentence starts with a time word, is werden still second?
