Futur I in German – what it does (and when you really need it)

• Form: a conjugated form of werden + infinitive at the end of the clause.
  • Ich werde morgen lange arbeiten.
  • Wir werden am Wochenende im Hotel sein.
• Use: talk about the future, make predictions, promises, or decisions.
• Very often, Germans also use present tense + time word for the future. Futur I is stronger, more explicit, or more formal.

1. The building blocks: “werden” + infinitive

Futur I is always a two-part verb form.

• Part 1: werden, conjugated, stands in position 2 (in statements).
• Part 2: the infinitive (dictionary form) stands at the very end of the clause.

• One conjugated verb only:
  • Ich werde arbeite morgen. → Ich werde morgen arbeiten.
  • Wir werden heute hören ein Konzert. → Wir werden heute ein Konzert hören.

2. Word order in statements: where does everything go?

Think of a simple pattern:

[1. Place / time / topic] + [2. „werden“ (conjugated)] + […] + [end: infinitive]

• Time at the beginning:
  • Morgen werde ich die Tickets kaufen.
  • Nächste Woche werden wir im Hotel übernachten.
• Subject at the beginning:
  • Ich werde morgen früher aufstehen.
  • Meine Kolleginnen werden später auf der Messe stehen.

Important details:

• „werden“ is the only verb in second position.
• The full verb goes all the way to the end.
• Other information (time, place, object) sits in the middle.

3. Questions with Futur I: just move “werden”

For yes/no questions:

Werden + subject + […] + infinitive?

• Werdet ihr morgen in der Pause die Tickets bestellen?
• Wirst du heute Abend länger arbeiten?

For W-questions (who, what, when, etc.):

W-word + werden + subject + […] + infinitive?

• Wann wirst du die E-Mails schreiben?
• Wo werdet ihr nach dem Konzert essen?

Typical mistakes:

• Werdet ihr morgen in der Pause bestellt die Tickets?
  → Werdet ihr morgen in der Pause die Tickets bestellen?
• Wann wirst du schreibst die E-Mails?
  → Wann wirst du die E-Mails schreiben?

4. Futur I with “sein” and other irregular verbs

Good news: in Futur I, the infinitive is always regular.

• Präteritum changes like war, stand, ging, kam do not appear in Futur I.
• You only use the infinitive: sein, stehen, gehen, kommen …

• Correct: Wir werden nächste Woche im Homeoffice sein.
• Wir werden nächste Woche im Homeoffice sind.

5. Futur I or present tense? What Germans really say

In everyday German, the present tense + time word is often enough.

• Present as future:
  • Ich arbeite morgen im Homeoffice.
  • Wir fahren am Freitag zum Konzert.
• Futur I:
  • Ich werde morgen im Homeoffice arbeiten.
  • Wir werden am Freitag zum Konzert fahren.

When is Futur I useful?

• Predictions / assumptions:
  • Er wird schon im Zug sein. (I guess / probably)
  • Es wird heute Abend viel regnen. (prediction)
• Decisions at the moment of speaking:
  • Okay, ich werde die Tickets kaufen.
• Formal or written style:
  • Die Firma wird im nächsten Jahr ein neues Produkt einführen.

6. Typical mistakes to avoid (quick checklist)

• Two conjugated verbs – wrong
  • Ich werde kaufe ein Auto.
  • → Ich werde ein Auto kaufen.
• „werden“ at the end – wrong
  • Ich morgen ein Auto kaufen werde.
  • → Ich werde morgen ein Auto kaufen.
• Not using the infinitive – wrong
  • Er wird morgen im Büro ist.
  • → Er wird morgen im Büro sein.
• Forgetting the second verb – wrong
  • Wir werden morgen ins Konzert.
  • → Wir werden morgen ins Konzert gehen.

7. Step-by-step: build your own Futur I sentence

1. Choose the subject
   • ich, du, er/sie/es, wir, ihr, sie/Sie
2. Conjugate „werden“
   • ich werde
   • du wirst
   • er/sie/es wird
   • wir werden
   • ihr werdet
   • sie/Sie werden
3. Add information
   • time: morgen, nächste Woche, heute Abend …
   • place: im Büro, beim Festival, in Berlin …
   • objects: die Tickets, das Hotel, die Präsentation …
4. Put the infinitive at the end
   • Example plan: ich – werde – morgen – in Berlin – arbeiten
   • Final sentence: Ich werde morgen in Berlin arbeiten.

8. Self-check: do I really have a correct Futur I?

• Check 1: Do I see werden in the correct form?
  • Ich werde, du wirst, er/sie/es wird, wir werden, ihr werdet, sie/Sie werden.
• Check 2: Is werden the only conjugated verb?
  • If you see another ending like -e, -st, -t, -en on a second verb → probably wrong.
• Check 3: Does the infinitive stand at the end of the clause?
  • kaufen, hören, sein, stehen, arbeiten, fahren …
• Check 4: In a question: does werden stand right after the W-word or at the very beginning?

If you can answer yes to all checks, your Futur I sentence is very probably correct.
