- First, we only learn the form for the first person singular.
- After „Ich hätte gerne" comes a noun in the accusative; after „Ich würde gerne" sometimes comes a noun, but always a verb in the infinitive.
- „Ich hätte gerne" expresses a polite request in the present, for example when ordering in a restaurant.
- „Ich würde gerne" expresses a hypothetical wish for an action in the present or future, for example to learn an instrument.
