What this grammar does: past passive (focus on the action)

Use the passive when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or obvious (e.g., in IT/support, processes, reports).

Active: Who did it? Der Techniker hat das WLAN geprüft.
Passive: What happened to it? Das WLAN ist geprüft worden.

Key shift: the object of the active sentence becomes the subject in the passive sentence.

Two past forms you need here (and when to choose which)

How to build it step by step (self-check)

Find the object in the active sentence (what was done?).
Move it to the front: it becomes the new subject.
Choose the tense:
- Perfekt passive → ist/sind … worden
- Präteritum passive → wurde/wurden
Add the Partizip II (e.g., geprüft, geladen, geändert, gestartet).

Word order: where the pieces go

German likes to put the “extra verbs” at the end.

Perfekt passive: Das WLAN ist schon geprüft worden.
Präteritum passive: Die Datei wurde gestern geladen.

Rule of thumb: Partizip II goes near the end; worden is the very last word in Perfekt passive.

Common mistakes (and quick fixes)

Mixing tenses:
- ~~Das Meeting ist gestern geplant wurde.~~
- Correct: Das Meeting ist gestern geplant worden. / Das Meeting wurde gestern geplant.
Using “hat” in the passive Perfekt:
- ~~Die Datei hat geladen worden.~~
- Correct: Die Datei ist geladen worden.
Adding “worden” after “wurde”:
- ~~Die Verbindung wurde geprüft worden.~~
- Correct: Die Verbindung wurde geprüft.

“Ist” vs “wurde”: what’s the difference in meaning?

ist … worden = the action happened and it matters now.
Das WLAN ist geprüft worden. (So it should be fine now.)
wurde = you report what happened in the past.
Das WLAN wurde gestern geprüft. (Yesterday’s event in a report.)

Do you want to mention who did it? (optional “by …”)

If you want to add the doer, use von + dative.

Das WLAN ist von dem Techniker geprüft worden.
Die Datei wurde von der Abteilung geladen.

In professional German, leaving the doer out often sounds more neutral and process-focused.
