What this grammar does (reported speech in the Perfekt)

You use this structure to report what someone said about a finished action.

Direct speech: “I have done X.”
Reported speech: He said that he had done X.

In this book’s rule: in reported speech in the Perfekt you use haben as the auxiliary in the German reported clause.

The core pattern (3 steps)

Reporting verb in Perfekt: Er hat gesagt / Sie hat erklärt / Wir haben gehört
Connector: usually dass (that) or ob (whether) for yes/no questions
Reported clause in Perfekt: subject + object… + Partizip II + hat/haben at the end

Word order: the most common mistake

After dass/ob, German becomes a subordinate clause. That changes the verb position:

Correct: …, dass er das System organisiert hat.
Wrong: …, dass er ~~hat organisiert~~.
Wrong: …, dass er das System ~~hat organisiert~~.

Self-check: In the reported clause, can you put two verb parts at the end? (Partizip II + hat/haben)

Pronouns: “I” often becomes “he/she”

In reported speech you switch perspective.

Direct speech	Reported speech
Er sagt: „Ich habe das System organisiert.“	Er hat gesagt, dass er das System organisiert hat.
Sie erklärt: „Ich habe das Projekt geändert.“	Sie hat erklärt, dass sie das Projekt geändert hat.
Du sagst: „Ich habe heute länger gearbeitet.“	Du hast gesagt, dass du heute länger gearbeitet hast.

Self-check: Who said it? Make the pronoun match that person.

“dass” vs “ob”: statements vs yes/no questions

Statement → dass
Die Kollegin hat erklärt, dass sie die E-Mail schon geschickt hat.
Yes/no question → ob
Die Kundin hat gefragt, ob sie die Rechnung bezahlt hat.

Quick test: Can you answer with “yes/no”? → use ob.

“Always haben” in this unit: how to apply it

Normally German Perfekt can use haben or sein. In this unit, use haben in the reported clause.

… dass er das Angebot geprüft hat.
… dass sie die Mitteilung geändert hat.
… dass er das Problem gelöst hat.

Mini checklist before you submit your sentence

Did you use Perfekt in the reporting verb? (hat gesagt, hat erklärt, haben gehört)
Did you choose the right connector? dass (statement) / ob (yes/no question)
In the reported clause: is the ending Partizip II + hat/haben?
Did you adjust the pronoun (ich → er/sie/du/wir)?

Indirect speech in the perfect tense always uses the auxiliary verb haben.
