Temporale Sätze mit während & bevor

Mit während und bevor verbindet man zwei Handlungen zeitlich, z.B. lesen, warten, sprechen.

(With während and bevor you connect two actions in time, e.g. lesen, warten, sprechen.)

What these conjunctions do: time + a subordinate clause

während = at the same time (while).

bevor = earlier than / first (before).

  • They introduce a subordinate clause (Nebensatz).
  • In a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb goes to the end.
  • You need a comma between main clause and subordinate clause.

The key word order rule: verb goes to the end in the Nebensatz

Think of it as a “bracket”:

  • Start with während / bevor
  • Then subject + other information
  • Verb at the end

bevor … bevor + subject + … + verb

Correct: Ich leihe den Roman aus, bevor ich nach Hause gehe.

Wrong: … bevor ich gehe nach Hause.

Two correct sentence shapes (and what changes)

  • Main clause starts with the verb (because position 1 is used)

Bevor ich das Büro verlasse, gebe ich den Antrag ab.

Common mistake: repeating the subject after the subordinate clause

After a subordinate clause, the main clause begins with the verb (inversion).

Correct: Bevor ich gehe, rufe ich dich an.

Wrong: Bevor ich gehe, ich rufe dich an.

Meaning check: while vs. before (choose the right connector)

  • während: two actions overlap in time.
  • bevor: action A happens first, then action B.
Intended meaning German example
Parallel / at the same time Ich überprüfe die Zahlen, während du die Präsentation finalisierst.
Sequence / first–then Bevor wir starten können, unterschreibe ich die Unterlagen.

Exercise 2: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Combine the two sentences into one sentence using “while” or “before”. Pay attention to the comma and that the verb in the subordinate clause is at the end. Example: I cook. You lay the table. → I cook, while you lay the table.
