Indirekte Fragen mit ob berichten Ja/Nein-Fragen wie: „Ich weiß nicht, ob...", „Er fragt, ob...".

(Indirect questions with ob report yes/no questions, such as: „Ich weiß nicht, ob...", „Er fragt, ob...".)

What an “ob”-clause is (indirect yes/no question)

Use ob when you turn a direct yes/no question into an embedded (indirect) question.

  • Direct question: Ist der Weg weit?
  • Indirect question: Ich weiß nicht, ob der Weg weit ist.

Meaning: ob = “whether / if (yes or no)”.

The key word order change: the verb goes to the end

After ob, you are in a subordinate clause. That changes word order:

  • Rule: put the conjugated verb at the end.
  • Rule: keep the subject before that verb.
  • No inversion (no “verb-first” like in a direct question).
Direct question (verb first) Indirect with ob (verb last)
Gehen wir zum See? Er fragt, ob wir zum See gehen.
Ist das Meeting heute? Ich möchte wissen, ob das Meeting heute ist.

Common mistake: keeping the “question word order”

If you still “sound like a question” after ob, word order is usually wrong.

  • Wrong: Er fragt, ob gehen wir zum See.
  • Right: Er fragt, ob wir zum See gehen.
  • Wrong: Sie möchte wissen, ob ist der Wald steil.
  • Right: Sie möchte wissen, ob der Wald steil ist.

Punctuation: usually no question mark

  • Indirect question = normally no question mark.
  • The whole sentence is a statement: Ich weiß nicht, ob …

Exception (practical): If the whole sentence is asked as a question, you can use “?”

  • Weißt du, ob der Bus pünktlich kommt?

Where do commas go?

In German, a subordinate clause is separated with a comma.

  • Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute im Büro ist.
  • Sie fragt, ob wir später zurücklaufen.

A fast self-check (30 seconds)

  1. Is it a yes/no question? → then you probably need ob.
  2. Did you add a main clause? (e.g., Ich weiß nicht … / Er fragt …)
  3. After ob: subject first, conjugated verb last.
  4. Comma: before ob.

Mini patterns you can reuse in conversation

  • Ich weiß nicht, ob … ist/hat/kommt/geht.
  • Können Sie mir sagen, ob … möglich ist?
  • Wir klären, ob … funktioniert.

Tip: Build the sentence in two parts. First the main clause, then the ob-clause with the verb saved for the end.

  1. Main clause + ob + verb at the end
  2. The subject comes before the conjugated verb.
  3. No inversion after ob in the subordinate clause.

Exceptions!

  1. In an indirect question, the verb comes at the end.
  2. A question mark is not needed.
