Das Schulsystem wird von den Bundesländern geregelt. (The school system is regulated by the federal states.)
Jedes Bundesland entscheidet über Lehrer und Lehrpläne. (Each federal state decides on teachers and curricula.)
Alle Kinder gehen zuerst vier Jahre in die Grundschule. (All children first go to primary school for four years.)
Danach gehen sie aufs Gymnasium oder auf eine andere Schule. (After that, they go to Gymnasium or another type of school.)
Viele machen später eine Berufsausbildung im dualen System. (Many later complete vocational training in the dual system.)
Dabei arbeiten sie im Betrieb und lernen in der Berufsschule. (In this system, they work at a company and learn at vocational school.)
Gymnasiasten machen nach acht Jahren das Abitur. (Gymnasium students take the Abitur after eight years.)
Mit dem Abitur kann man an einer Universität studieren. (With the Abitur, you can study at a university.)
Deutschland gibt viel Geld für Bildung aus, aber weniger als andere europäische Länder. (Germany spends a lot of money on education, but less than other European countries.)

Two parents talk about their children's school and the German school system
1. Michel: Heute ist der erste Schultag. Unsere Kinder gehen jetzt auf die weiterführende Schule. Wie alt ist deine Tochter? (Today is the first day of school. Our children are now going to secondary school. How old is your daughter?)
2. Mareike: Meine Tochter ist elf Jahre alt. Sie geht jetzt auch auf die weiterführende Schule. (My daughter is eleven years old. She is now also going to secondary school.)
3. Michel: Was für ein Zufall! Mein Sohn lernt schon viel für gute Noten. (What a coincidence! My son is already studying a lot for good grades.)
4. Mareike: Meine Tochter auch. Sie geht aufs Gymnasium, um das Abitur zu machen. (My daughter too. She is going to a Gymnasium to get the Abitur.)
5. Michel: Welche Sprache hat sie gewählt? (Which language did she choose?)
6. Mareike: Sie wird Französisch lernen. Und deine Kinder? (She will learn French. And your children?)
7. Michel: Mein Sohn hat Spanisch gewählt und meine Tochter lernt Latein. (My son chose Spanish and my daughter is learning Latin.)
8. Mareike: Ich war früher auf der Gesamtschule. Da gab es keine Wahlsprachen. (I used to be at the comprehensive school. There were no elective languages there.)
9. Michel: Gut ist, dass das heute auf jeder weiterführenden Schule möglich ist. (The good thing is that this is possible today at every secondary school.)
