The process passive

The process passive (Vorgangspassiv) describes actions and puts the focus on an ongoing process, e.g. „Der Roman wird gelesen".

What the Vorgangspassiv does (werden-Passiv)

Use it when the action/process is important (what happens), not who does it.

Active = focus on the doer: Der Autor schreibt das Buch.
Vorgangspassiv = focus on the process: Das Buch wird geschrieben.

Typical contexts: work processes, reports, instructions, formal communication.

Build it in 3 steps (active → passive)

Find the object in accusative (wen/was?). This becomes the new subject.
Choose the correct form of “werden” (present/past).
Put Partizip II at the end of the clause.

Tense cheat sheet: which “werden” do you need?

Meaning	Form	Example
Present (now / generally)	wird/werden + Partizip II	Die Rechnung wird bezahlt.
Simple past (was done)	wurde/wurden + Partizip II	Die Rechnung wurde bezahlt.
Planned / future (will be done)	Partizip II + werden (2x werden total)	Die Reise wird geplant werden.

Note: In everyday German, people often avoid the double werden and choose another wording (e.g., time + present). But for grammar practice, this form is correct.

Word order: where do “werden” and Partizip II go?

Main clause: conjugated werden in position 2, Partizip II at the end.

Heute wird die Rechnung bezahlt.

With time/place at the beginning: the verb still stays in position 2.

Im Büro wird der Drucker repariert.

Subordinate clause (weil, dass, …): both verbs go to the end; Partizip II usually comes before werden.

…, weil der Drucker repariert wird.

Do you mention the doer? Use “von” (or “durch”)

If you want to say who does it: von + dative.

Der Vertrag wird von der Chefin unterschrieben.

If you want to say by means of / through what: often durch.

Die Daten werden durch ein Tool analysiert.

Common traps (quick self-check)

After “werden” you need Partizip II (not the infinitive).
~~Der Drucker wird reparieren.~~

Der Drucker wird repariert.
Subject-verb agreement: werden must match the new subject.
~~Die Regeln wird erklärt.~~

Die Regeln werden erklärt.
Not every verb works well in passive: verbs without an accusative object often cannot form a normal passive.
Wir helfen dem Kunden. → no accusative object, so no standard passive with a new subject.

Vorgangspassiv vs. Zustandspassiv (a practical distinction)

werden + Partizip II = process, action happens.

sein + Partizip II = result/state, action is finished and we describe the outcome.

State (result)	ist + Partizip II	Die Tür ist geschlossen. (it is closed now)

Did I move the accusative object to subject position?
Did I pick wird/werden or wurde/wurden correctly?
Is the Partizip II at the end of the clause?
Does werden match singular/plural?
If I add the doer: did I use von + dative?

Exceptions!

In the process passive, the focus is on the action, not on the person doing it.

Instruction: Write the sentences in the passive voice (werden + past participle). Example: Der Koch kocht die Suppe. → Die Suppe wird gekocht.
