Meaning: choose the right time expression

• von … bis = a time span with start + end (from … to)
• seit = start in the past and it is still true now (since)
• bis = an end point / deadline (until / by)

Form: where does it go in the sentence?

• von … bis usually sits together as one time phrase:

  • Ich nehme von 18 bis 19 Uhr am Tanzkurs teil.

  • Der Kurs ist von Montag bis Donnerstag.

• seit can be at the beginning (common) or later:

  • Seit letzter Woche übe ich jeden Abend Deutsch.

  • Ich übe seit letzter Woche jeden Abend Deutsch.

• bis is also a time phrase and often comes near the end:

  • Ich habe mich bis nächste Woche für die Probestunde angemeldet.

• Mixing “seit” with a finished time span

  Seit Montag bis Freitag → von Montag bis Freitag

• Using “seit” with the future (does not work, because “seit” needs a past start)
