Time expressions with „von … bis", „seit" and „bis"

With the time expressions von … bis, seit and bis, you express the time period of an action.

What these three time expressions do (quick decision)

von … bis = a complete time window (start + end)
seit = starting point in the past → the situation continues until now
bis = endpoint / deadline (often in the future)

von Montag bis Freitag	from Monday to Friday	Der Sprachkurs geht von Montag bis Freitag.

Common mistake: only giving one side.
- ~~von 18 Uhr~~ (missing the end)
- ~~bis 19 Uhr~~ (that’s only an endpoint; use it as bis)

seit Januar	since January	Seit Januar mache ich den Onlinekurs.
seit drei Wochen	for three weeks (up to now)	Seit drei Wochen übe ich jeden Abend Deutsch.

English vs German mapping:
- English since → German seit
- English for (three weeks) often → German seit (drei Wochen) when it’s still continuing
Self-check: Can you add “and it’s still going on”? If yes → seit.

bis answers: Until when? / By when?
Use it for deadlines, opening hours, or when something is true only up to a certain point.

bis 16 Uhr	until 4 p.m.	Der Chef ist bis 16 Uhr im Büro.

Typical confusion:
- bis is not a duration. It is only the end point.
- ~~Ich bin bis zwei Monate im Yogakurs.~~ (wrong: “two months” is a duration continuing to now → use seit)

In neutral sentences, the time information often comes early (after the verb) or at the beginning.

If you start with time, remember: verb stays in position 2.

Tip: If you can naturally add “no later than …” → it’s almost always bis.

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences with the appropriate time indication: use (from … to), (since) or (until), without changing the meaning.
