If your wallet is stolen or you lose it while on vacation, first block your bank cards and go to the nearest police station. There, report the theft and get a written confirmation for your insurance. Also write down exactly what is missing: your ID, cards, or cash.

For new travel documents, contact the German embassy or consulate. Bring the police confirmation with you. If you have only lost something, also check with the lost and found office—sometimes people turn in lost IDs or keys there.

Also check with the lost and found at the station to see if the wallet has been handed in. For the embassy, take the police report with you and, if possible, a copy of your ID or another form of identification.
