Imperative forms: Deepening and special cases: „gehen wir!

Der erweiterte Imperativ zeigt formelle, informelle und gemeinsame Aufforderungen wie „Seien Sie pünktlich!, Arbeiten wir".

(The extended imperative shows formal, informal, and joint requests such as „Seien Sie pünktlich!, Arbeiten wir".)

What the imperative is really doing (A2 focus)

In German, the Imperativ is used for:

  • direct instructions (clear, practical)
  • polite requests (professional situations)
  • suggestions for the group ("let’s …")

The main decision is not grammar—it’s which relationship you are speaking in: du / ihr / Sie / wir.

Choose the right form first: du, ihr, Sie, or wir?

Who am I addressing? Typical context Imperative form

ihr (several people, informal) your team (informal), friends Arbeitet! / Seid ruhig! / Habt Geduld!

Word order you can rely on (quick and safe)

  • wir-imperative: Verb + wir (+ rest)
    • Arbeiten wir zuerst die Anforderungen durch.
    • Gehen wir um 9 Uhr ins Gespräch.
    • Common mistake: Gehen wir gehen … (verb only once)
  • Sie-imperative: Verb (infinitive form) + Sie (+ rest)
    • Sprechen Sie bitte deutlich.
    • Haben Sie bitte einen Moment Geduld.
    • Common mistake: Bitte sprechen deutlich Sie … (keep Verb + Sie together)
    • Spelling checkpoint: formal Sie is always capitalized. sie is wrong here.

The two verbs that cause most problems: sein & haben

These are used constantly in workplace German, and they are irregular in the imperative.

Verb du ihr Sie (formal)
sein (to be) Sei ruhig! Seid ruhig! Seien Sie ruhig!
haben (to have) Hab Geduld! Habt Geduld! Haben Sie Geduld!

Self-check: If you see Geduld, the verb is almost always haben: Hab/Habt/Haben Sie Geduld!

Polite tone without changing the grammar

  • bitte can go early or after the verb phrase:
    • Seien Sie bitte pünktlich.
    • Seien Sie pünktlich, bitte.
  • For professional contexts, Sie-imperative is usually the safest choice.
  • Use wir-imperative to sound cooperative (not bossy):
    • Schauen wir uns zuerst den Lebenslauf an.

Common mix-ups to avoid (fast checklist)

  1. Do not mix informal and formal in one sentence:
    • Hab Geduld, Sie.
    • Correct: Haben Sie Geduld.
  2. wir-imperative is not “Wir + verb”:
    • Wir arbeiten an den Anforderungen! (statement)
    • Correct: Arbeiten wir an den Anforderungen!
  3. Keep Verb + Sie together:
    • Bitte seien pünktlich Sie …
    • Correct: Seien Sie bitte pünktlich …

Mini routine: build the imperative in 3 steps

  1. Pick the relationship: du / ihr / Sie / wir
  2. Pick the verb: normal verb, or irregular sein/haben
  3. Place it correctly:
    • wir: Verb + wir
    • Sie: Verb + Sie
    • du/ihr: imperative form (often shortest)

Final self-check: Does your sentence sound like a request/suggestion (imperative), not a simple statement?

  1. The „wir" imperative expresses suggestions, e.g. 'Gehen wir!'.

Exceptions!

  1. The imperative exists in the second person singular (Hab Geduld!), in the second person plural (Habt Geduld!) and in formal speech (Haben Sie Geduld!).
