1. What do weder … noch and sowohl … als auch do?

  • weder … noch = neither … nor → excludes two things (both are NOT true).
  • sowohl … als auch = both … and → combines two things (both ARE true).

Both are used to talk about two elements: two nouns, two verbs, two adjectives, two parts of a sentence.

2. Form: where do the words go?

Think of them as two-part brackets around the two elements.

  • Important: it is always exactly these pairs:
    • weder – noch, never weder … und
    • sowohl – als auch, never sowohl … und or sowohl … noch

3. Word order: what happens to the verb?

Good news: the verb position stays normal.

  • Both weder and sowohl stand directly before the first element (noun / verb / adjective).
  • noch / als auch stand directly before the second element.
  • The finite verb does not move because of them.

Compare:

  • Der Kunde hat den Vertrag bekommen.
  • Der Kunde hat weder den Vertrag noch die Rechnung bekommen.
  • Der Kunde hat sowohl den Vertrag als auch die Rechnung bekommen.

The verb hat stays in position 2 in all three sentences.

4. With nouns, verbs, adjectives: typical patterns

a) Two nouns (very common)

  • Der Empfänger hat weder das Paket noch den Brief bekommen.
  • Der Empfänger hat sowohl das Paket als auch den Brief bekommen.

b) Two verbs

  • Der Kunde möchte weder anrufen noch schreiben.
    → The second verb is usually in the infinitive at the end.
  • Ich muss sowohl zum Postamt gehen als auch ein Formular ausfüllen.

c) Two adjectives

  • Die Post ist weder schnell noch zuverlässig.
  • Der Online-Service ist sowohl schnell als auch zuverlässig.

d) Two whole parts of a sentence

  • Weder hat der Kunde angerufen, noch hat er eine E-Mail geschrieben.
  • Sowohl hat der Kunde angerufen, als auch hat er eine E-Mail geschrieben. (more formal / written)

At A2 level you usually combine short elements (nouns, verbs, adjectives), not long clauses.

5. Typical mistakes and how to avoid them

Watch these three danger zones.

  1. Mixing the pairs
    • Ich schreibe weder eine E-Mail und einen Brief.
    • ✔ Ich schreibe weder eine E-Mail noch einen Brief.
  2. Using und / oder instead of the pair word
    • Der Kunde hat weder den Vertrag oder die Rechnung erhalten.
    • ✔ Der Kunde hat weder den Vertrag noch die Rechnung erhalten.
  3. Adding extra negation with weder … noch
    • Der Kunde hat nicht weder den Vertrag noch die Rechnung erhalten.
    • ✔ Der Kunde hat weder den Vertrag noch die Rechnung erhalten.

    weder … noch already contains the negation. You do not need an extra nicht.

6. How to decide quickly: exclude or combine?

Ask yourself one question:

  • Do I want to say “not this and not that”? → use weder … noch.
  • Do I want to say “this and also that”? → use sowohl … als auch.

Mini-check with office / post examples:

  • Ich sende ___ einen Brief ___ eine SMS; ich rufe an.
    → You send neither → Ich sende weder einen Brief noch eine SMS; ich rufe an.
  • Ich sende ___ den Vertrag ___ die AGB per E-Mail.
    → You send both → Ich sende sowohl den Vertrag als auch die AGB per E-Mail.

7. Step-by-step: build your own sentence

  1. Find the two things you want to connect.
    • Example: “email” and “letter”.
  2. Decide: exclude or combine?
    • Exclude → weder … noch.
    • Combine → sowohl … als auch.
  3. Put the pair around the two things.
    • Exclude: weder eine E-Mail noch einen Brief.
    • Combine: sowohl eine E-Mail als auch einen Brief.
  4. Insert this block into a normal sentence.
    • Ich schreibe weder eine E-Mail noch einen Brief.
    • Ich schreibe sowohl eine E-Mail als auch einen Brief.

8. Self-check: can you do this now?

  • Can you form one sentence with weder … noch to say what you do not send today? (e.g. letter, SMS)
  • Can you form one sentence with sowohl … als auch to say what you do send to a customer? (e.g. invoice, contract)
  • Can you check your sentence and see:
    • Did you use the correct pairs (no mix with und / oder)?
    • Does the verb position stay normal (position 2 in main clauses)?
    • Did you avoid double negation with weder … noch?

If you can answer “yes” to these questions, you are ready to use weder … noch and sowohl … als auch in real conversations.
