The key rule: you must use the pair

These are fixed pairs. Don’t mix them.
weder always expects noch.
sowohl always expects als auch.

Where to place them in a sentence (word order)

weder / sowohl usually comes right before item 1.
noch / als auch comes right before item 2.
You can connect nouns, verbs, adjectives, or prepositional phrases.

Prepositional phrases

Case and articles: what changes (and what doesn’t)

The pair words don’t change the case. The case comes from the verb or preposition.
So you may see different articles/endings if the nouns have different gender/case.

Same case, different gender

Why: Akkusativ (write something) + E-Mail (fem.) / Brief (masc.)

Prepositions control the case

Wir haben weder Zeit für das Meeting noch für das Telefonat.

Why: für + Akkusativ
