Element 1 and element 2 must be “parallel”: two nouns, two times, two places, two verbs, etc.
Use it to link words or phrases inside one sentence.

Case and articles: why the endings change

The connectors do not decide the case. The verb does.

schreiben (to write) → often takes accusative for the thing you write
bekommen (to receive) → accusative for what you receive

Accusative examples

Ich schreibe weder eine E-Mail noch einen Brief.

Der Empfänger hat sowohl das Paket als auch den Brief bekommen.

Tip: If you’re unsure, ask: “I write/receive what?” → that object usually determines the case.

Negation: avoid double “not” patterns

weder … noch already expresses a negative idea → usually no extra “nicht”.

Natural: Ich kann weder heute noch morgen zur Post gehen.

Usually avoid: ~~Ich kann nicht weder heute noch morgen zur Post gehen.~~

Exception idea (rare at A2): If another part is negated for a different reason, “nicht” can appear elsewhere, but don’t aim for this yet.

Word order: what stays stable in the sentence

The sentence structure stays normal: Verb in position 2 in a main clause.
The pair sits where the linked elements would normally be.

Main clause	Ich schicke sowohl den Brief als auch das Paket heute ab.
Time expressions	Wir sind weder am Montag noch am Dienstag im Büro.

Common mistakes (and how to fix them fast)

Mixing connectors
- ~~weder … oder~~ → weder … noch
- ~~sowohl … und~~ → sowohl … als auch
Non-parallel elements
- Better than: ~~… sowohl das Paket an als auch gibt mir eine Nachricht~~
- Use parallel verbs: Meine Nachbarin nimmt das Paket an und gibt mir eine Nachricht.
- Or make both parts full clauses (advanced): Sie nimmt sowohl das Paket an, als auch sie gibt mir eine Nachricht. (grammatical but stylistically heavy; avoid at A2)

Mini checklist before you submit a sentence

Meaning: is it “none” (weder) or “both” (sowohl)?
Parallel: are you linking the same type of thing (noun+noun, time+time, verb+verb)?
