Sentence structure: main clause and interrogative clause

Zinsbouw: hoofdzin en vraagzin

In het Nederlands komt de tijd vaak aan het begin van de zin, terwijl de manier of plaats minder vaak vooraan staat.

(In Dutch, the time expression often comes at the beginning of the sentence, while manner or place less often come first.)

What matters most: the finite verb position (V2)

In Dutch main clauses, the key rule is: the finite verb (persoonsvorm) is in position 2.

  • Finite verb = the verb that changes with the subject (ik bel, jij belt, wij bellen, heb/heeft).
  • Whatever you put in position 1 (subject, time, place, etc.), the finite verb still comes right after it.

Main clause without inversion: Subject first

Structure: Subject + finite verb + rest

  • Ik verbind u door met de manager.
  • Wij sturen vandaag de bevestiging.

Self-check: Is the subject first? Then the verb comes immediately after it.

Inversion: time/place first → verb still in position 2

If you start with a time or place expression, you get inversion.

Structure: Time/Place + finite verb + subject + rest

Start (position 1) Finite verb (position 2) Subject Rest
Morgen bel ik u terug.
Op kantoor bespreken we het contract.
  • Correct: Morgen stuur ik je de informatie.
  • Wrong: Morgen ik stuur je de informatie.

Self-check: What is in position 1? The next word must be the finite verb.

Questions: the finite verb comes before the subject

  • Closed (yes/no) question: Finite verb + subject + rest
    Heb je even tijd?
  • Open question: Question word + finite verb + subject + rest
Waarom neemt zij haar telefoon niet op?

Tip: In questions, you do not start with the subject, so the verb naturally moves in front of it.

The “rest of the sentence”: Time – Manner – Place (T–M–P)

After the verb (and subject), Dutch often prefers this order:

Tijd → Manier → Plaats

  • Ik ga morgen (T) met de trein (M) naar Amsterdam (P).
  • We spreken u vanmiddag (T) telefonisch (M) op kantoor (P).

Common pitfall: T–M–P is mainly about the rest. It does not change the rule that the finite verb must be in position 2 in a main clause.

Fast decision guide (use this before you speak)

  1. Pick the sentence type: statement / inversion / open question / closed question.
  2. Find the finite verb (the one that matches the subject).
  3. Place the finite verb:
    • Statement: after the subject.
    • Inversion: after the first element (time/place/etc.).
    • Closed question: first.
    • Open question: after the question word.
  4. Finish the rest and (if needed) use T–M–P.

Mini self-test (spot the verb position)

  • Correct or wrong? Vandaag noteer ik uw nummer. ✅
  • Correct or wrong? Waarom zij neemt haar telefoon niet op? ❌ → Waarom neemt zij haar telefoon niet op?
  • Correct or wrong? Morgen ik bel u terug. ❌ → Morgen bel ik u terug.
Type zin (Sentence type)Structuur (Structure)Voorbeeld (Example)
Hoofdzin (Main clause)Onderwerp + Finiete verbum + Rest (Subject + finite verb + rest)Ik verbind u door met de manager.  (I will put you through to the manager.)
Hoofdzin met inversie (Main clause with inversion)Rest = Inversiecommando + Finiete verbum + Onderwerp + Rest (Rest = inversion trigger + finite verb + subject + rest)Morgen stuur ik je de informatie via WhatsApp. (Tomorrow I’ll send you the information via WhatsApp.)
Open vraag (Open question)Vraagwoord + Finiete verbum + Onderwerp + Rest (Question word + finite verb + subject + rest)Waarom neemt zij haar telefoon niet op? (Why isn’t she answering her phone?)
Gesloten vraag (Yes/no question)Finiete verbum + Onderwerp + Rest (Finite verb + subject + rest)Heb je even tijd om iets te bespreken? (Do you have a moment to discuss something?)

Exceptions!

  1. The standard order for the rest of the sentence is: Time – Manner – Place (T-M-P) (vb. Ik ga morgen (Tijd) met de trein (Manier) naar Amsterdam (Plaats)).
  2. With inversion and in questions, the finite verb comes before the subject.
