Sentence structure: main clause and interrogative clause

Zinsbouw: hoofdzin en vraagzin

In het Nederlands komt de tijd vaak aan het begin van de zin, terwijl de manier of plaats minder vaak vooraan staat.

(In Dutch, the time often comes at the beginning of the sentence, while the manner or place less often comes first.)

The key idea: Dutch is a “verb-second” language (V2)

In a main clause (hoofdzin), the finite verb (the part that changes: bel, belt, neem, neemt, stuur, stuurt) is almost always in position #2.

  • Position #1 = one “chunk” (often the subject, time, or place)
  • Position #2 = the finite verb
  • After that = the “rest” (objects, time/manner/place, extra info)

Think: “Whatever I put first, the verb comes right after it.”

Step 1: Find the finite verb (persoonsvorm)

  • In the present: ik bel, hij belt, u neemt
  • In the past: ik belde, we namen op
  • With modal verbs: ik kan u terugbellen (finite verb = kan)

Self-check: Can you change the subject and the verb changes too? Then you found the finite verb.

Normal main clause: Subject first (no inversion)

Meaning Structure Example (Dutch)
Standard statement Subject + finite verb + rest Ik verbind u door met de manager.
  • Good when you start with ik / jij / u / hij / zij / wij.
  • It sounds neutral and professional.

Inversion: when something else comes first

If you start with time, place, or another element, Dutch uses inversion:

  • Position #1 = time/place/etc.
  • Position #2 = finite verb
  • Then the subject
Start with… Correct Common mistake
Time Morgen bel ik u terug. Morgen ik bel u terug.
Place In Rotterdam zit ons salesteam. In Rotterdam ons salesteam zit.
Extra info Na de vergadering stuur ik u een e-mail. Na de vergadering ik stuur u een e-mail.

Self-check: Is the finite verb still in spot #2? If yes, your word order is probably correct.

Questions: two reliable patterns

Type Use Structure Example (Dutch)
Open question You want information Question word + finite verb + subject + rest Waarom neemt u de telefoon niet op?
Yes/no question You want confirmation Finite verb + subject + rest Heeft u even tijd om iets te bespreken?
  • If you use a question word (waarom, wanneer, hoe, wat): the verb goes immediately after it.
  • Yes/no: start directly with the finite verb.

T–M–P in the “rest” of the sentence (Time – Manner – Place)

When time, manner, and place are all in the same clause, the neutral order is:

Tijd → Manier → Plaats

Time Manner Place Example (Dutch)
morgen via WhatsApp naar het kantoor Ik stuur u morgen via WhatsApp naar het kantoor de informatie.

Practical tip: If you move time to the front, you still keep T–M–P in the rest, but inversion happens:

  • Morgen stuur ik u via WhatsApp de informatie.

Quick self-check checklist (before you hit “send”)

  1. Find the finite verb (persoonsvorm).
  2. Check position #2: is the finite verb in spot #2 in a statement?
  3. Did you start with time/place/etc.? Then use inversion (verb before subject).
  4. Question word used? Then: question word + verb directly together.
  5. If you have time/manner/place together: T–M–P.
Type zin (Sentence type)Structuur (Structure)Voorbeeld (Example)
Hoofdzin (Main clause)Onderwerp + Finiete verbum + Rest (Subject + finite verb + rest)Ik verbind u door met de manager.  (I will put you through to the manager.)
Hoofdzin met inversie (Main clause with inversion)Rest = Inversiecommando + Finiete verbum + Onderwerp + Rest (Rest = inversion trigger + finite verb + subject + rest)Morgen stuur ik je de informatie via WhatsApp. (Tomorrow I’ll send you the information via WhatsApp.)
Open vraag (Open question)Vraagwoord + Finiete verbum + Onderwerp + Rest (Question word + finite verb + subject + rest)Waarom neemt zij haar telefoon niet op? (Why isn’t she answering her phone?)
Gesloten vraag (Closed question)Finiete verbum + Onderwerp + Rest (Finite verb + subject + rest)Heb je even tijd om iets te bespreken? (Do you have a moment to discuss something?)

Exceptions!

  1. The standard order for the rest of the sentence is: Time – Manner – Place (T-M-P) (vb. Ik ga morgen (Tijd) met de trein (Manier) naar Amsterdam (Plaats)).
  2. With inversion and in questions, the finite verb comes before the subject.

1. Morgen ___ ik u terug zodra ik de manager gesproken heb.

Tomorrow ___ I will call you back as soon as I have spoken to the manager.

2. Waarom ___ u de telefoon niet op?

Why ___ you don’t answer the phone?

3. ___ u mij uw telefoonnummer geven, zodat ik u kan terugbellen?

___ you give me your phone number, so that I can call you back?

4. Ik verbind u nu door met de afdeling sales ___ Rotterdam.

I am now putting you through to the sales department ___ Rotterdam.

Exercise 2: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences as requested: turn them into a question or place time/place/manner at the front so inversion occurs (finite verb before the subject). Use the order Time – Manner – Place where relevant.

Exercise 3: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence.

1.
Incorrect order: in questions, the finite verb comes directly after the question word (Why are you...).
2.
Incorrect inversion: if the sentence starts with a time expression, the finite verb must come before the subject (Tomorrow will I...?).
