These are signaalwoorden that link two ideas with a contrast:

• expected vs. reality (something surprising happens)
• choice A vs. choice B (clear comparison)
• not X, but YES Y (strong correction)

Word order: the key point (inversion)

If the contrasting word starts the second part, Dutch usually has inversion:

• After the signal word, the verb comes first.
• The subject comes after the verb.
