You use this structure when you look back and imagine a different past.

Reality: it did not happen.
Message: “If X had happened, Y would have happened.”
Typical in feedback, evaluations, job situations, and reflections.

Word order: why the verb position changes

Als starts a subordinate clause. That pushes the finite verb (had/was) to the end of the als-part.

Main clause first	Ik had anders gereageerd als ik dat geweten had.	No inversion needed

Had or was? (the most common doubt)

Most verbs use had.
Use was with verbs that take zijn in the perfect tense (movement / change of state).

Movement / change (uses zijn)	was + participle	Als ik op tijd was gekomen, was ik erbij geweest.

What about “dan” in the result?

Dan is optional.
It adds emphasis: “then / in that case”.
It belongs to the result clause.

Als zij parttime had gewerkt, dan had ze meer tijd gehad.

Common mistakes (and how to self-correct)

Mixing tenses
~~Als ik dat heb geweten, had ik gebleven.~~

Fix: use past perfect in the als-clause: Als ik dat geweten had, …
Forgetting inversion after the comma
~~Als hij beter had voorbereid, hij had de baan gekregen.~~

Fix: after the comma the verb comes first: …, had hij …
Wrong auxiliary
~~Als ik op tijd had gekomen, …~~

Fix: komen uses zijn: Als ik op tijd was gekomen, …

Quick checklist before you speak

Am I imagining a different past (not a real plan)?
Als-clause: did I put the finite verb had/was at the end?
Main clause: did I use had/was + participle too?
If als-clause comes first: did I do inversion after the comma?
Optional: add dan for emphasis.

Exceptions!

You can also use dan for extra emphasis in the result clause of the sentence.
