Plural forms of nouns

Meervoudsvormen van zelfstandige naamwoorden

Zelfstandige naamwoorden krijgen in het meervoud meestal -s, -en, -eren of -’s, afhankelijk van de uitgang.

(In the plural, nouns usually take -s, -en, -eren or -’s, depending on the ending.)

Plural endings you should recognise quickly (B1)

Many Dutch nouns form the plural with -en or -s. The table in your book shows a few common patterns where the ending of the word tells you which plural is most likely.

Pattern 1: Job titles with French/Latin endings → usually -s

Singular endingPlural endingExample
-ier-iersbankier → bankiers
-eur-eurschauffeur → chauffeurs
-ster-stersverkoopster → verkoopsters
  • What to watch: you are not adding -en here. You add -s to the whole word.
  • Common mistake: chauffeures (wrong) → chauffeurs (right).

Pattern 2: Nouns ending in -e → add -s

Some words already end in an unstressed -e sound (like “uh”). They often take -s in the plural.

SingularPlural
docentedocentes
  • Self-check: do you see an -e at the end? Try -s first.

Pattern 3: Abstract nouns ending in -heid-heden

These are often “concept” words (like possibility, clarity, safety).

SingularPlural
mogelijkheidmogelijkheden
  • What to watch: the plural is not -heids; it changes to -heden.

Pattern 4: A small group with -eren (learn as a set)

A few common nouns have an irregular plural with -eren. The most frequent one is:

SingularPlural
kindkinderen
  • Tip: if you meet another frequent word with -eren, store it as vocabulary (it’s not a productive rule for all nouns).

Pattern 5: Words ending in -a → usually -a’s

To keep the word easy to read and pronounce, Dutch often uses an apostrophe with -a’s.

SingularPlural
collegacollega’s
  • Common mistake: collegas (less clear) or collega's (wrong apostrophe for this course) → collega’s (right).
  • Typing note: use the curly apostrophe if your system does that automatically; in Dutch it’s standard in publishing.

Fast decision checklist (before you choose a plural)

  1. Look at the ending: -ier / -eur / -ster / -e / -heid / -a?
  2. Apply the matching pattern from the table.
  3. Do a quick realism check: does the plural look like a normal Dutch word (no extra vowels like -eures)?
  4. One exception group: if it’s like kind, remember the special form kinderen.

Mini self-test (you can do this mentally)

  • chauffeur → ? → chauffeurs
  • mogelijkheid → ? → mogelijkheden
  • collega → ? → collega’s
Uitgang (Ending)Enkelvoud → Meervoud (Singular → Plural)
-ier → -iers (→ -iers)bankier → bankiers (banker → bankers)
-eur → -eurs (→ -eurs)chauffeur → chauffeurs (driver → drivers)
-ster → -sters (→ -sters)verkoopster → verkoopsters (saleswoman → saleswomen)
-e → -es (→ -es)docente → docentes (teacher (female) → teachers)
-heid → -heden (→ -hoods / -ities)mogelijkheid → mogelijkheden (possibility → possibilities)
Zelfstandig naamwoord → -eren (Noun → -eren)kind → kinderen (child → children)
-a → -a's (→ -a's)collega → collega’s (colleague → colleagues)
