Use of the past perfect with the simple past

Gebruik van de voltooid verleden tijd met de onvoltooid verleden tijd

De voltooid verleden tijd wordt gecombineerd met de onvoltooid verleden tijd om twee acties in het verleden te beschrijven, waarbij de ene handeling al voltooid was voordat de andere begon.

(The past perfect is combined with the simple past to describe two actions in the past, where one action had already been completed before the other began.)

When do you use OVT + VVT together?

Use this combination when you talk about two past actions and you want to show which one happened first.

  • OVT (simple past) = the later past moment (the “main timeline”).
  • VVT / past perfect = the action that was already completed earlier.

Think: “When X happened, Y had already happened.”

The timeline trick (quick mental check)

  1. Find the two actions.
  2. Ask: Which action is earlier?
  3. Put the earlier action in VVT (had/was + past participle).
  4. Put the later action in OVT.
Time relationship Structure Example (Dutch)
Later moment in the past OVT Toen ik bij het UWV aankwam, …
Earlier completed action had/was + voltooid deelwoord had ik mijn motivatiebrief al afgemaakt.

Signal words: what they usually mean

  • voordat (before) → the main clause is later; the other action is earlier (often VVT).
  • nadat (after) → the “after”-action is later; the earlier action often goes in VVT.
  • toen (when, one-time) → often used to set a clear past moment; what was already done before that moment goes in VVT.
  • terwijl (while) → usually actions happen at the same time. Use VVT only if you want to stress that one action had finished earlier.

How to form the VVT (past perfect) in Dutch

VVT = OVT of “hebben/zijn” + past participle

Type of verb Auxiliary in VVT Example
Most verbs had (from hebben) Ik had mijn cv geüpdatet.
Movement / change of state was (from zijn) Ik was eerder al vertrokken.

Word order: where do “had/was” and the participle go?

  • Main clause: had/was comes early, participle usually at the end.

Ik had mijn cv al gecheckt.

  • Subordinate clause (with voordat/nadat/toen/terwijl): the conjugated verb goes to the end.

… voordat ik naar het uitzendbureau ging.

Common pitfall: In VVT, the participle still tends to stay at the end.

… had geüpdatet ik mijn cv… had ik mijn cv geüpdatet

Typical mistakes (and how to fix them)

  • Mistake: using only OVT for both actions.

Toen ik aankwam, maakte ik mijn motivatiebrief al af.

Fix: Toen ik aankwam, had ik mijn motivatiebrief al afgemaakt.

  • Mistake: VVT for the later action (timeline reversed).

Voordat ik ging solliciteren, ging ik mijn cv updaten.

Fix: Voordat ik ging solliciteren, had ik mijn cv geüpdatet.

  • Mistake: forgetting that the auxiliary must be in the past.

Toen ik aankwam, heb ik mijn motivatiebrief al afgemaakt.

Fix: Toen ik aankwam, had ik mijn motivatiebrief al afgemaakt.

Self-check: do you really need the past perfect here?

  • If the order is already clear and you’re not stressing “earlier”, Dutch often uses only OVT.
  • Use VVT when you want to make the sequence unambiguous or when the listener might otherwise misunderstand.

Final check question: Can you add “had already” in English to the earlier action? If yes, Dutch VVT is usually the right choice.

  1. Often used with time expressions such as 'voordat' (before), 'nadat' (after), or 'terwijl' (while)
  2. Combining these two tenses helps make the context and the time relationship between two actions clear

Exercise 3: Multiple Choice

Instruction: For each question, choose the sentence with the correct combination of simple past and past perfect.

1.
Incorrect: this sentence uses only simple past; the action of the CV was already completed before the moment at the UWV, so past perfect is needed ('had ... finished').
2.
Incorrect: here the past perfect for the earlier action is missing; you should say 'I had checked my CV'.
