Past perfect: gestudeerd hebben / toegelaten zijn tot

Voltooid verleden tijd: gestudeerd hebben / toegelaten zijn tot

De voltooid verleden tijd (plusquamperfectum) beschrijft een actie of situatie die vóór een andere actie of situatie in het verleden gebeurde.

(The past perfect (pluperfect) describes an action or situation that happened before another action or situation in the past.)

When do you use the voltooid verleden tijd (past perfect)?

Use it when you talk about two moments in the past and you want to show that one action happened earlier than the other.

  • Earlier past actionvoltooid verleden tijd (had/was + past participle)
  • Later past actiononvoltooid verleden tijd (imperfect)
Timeline What happens? Typical tense
Past, earlier Background / already completed had/was + participle
Past, later Main event you narrate imperfect (e.g. ik leverde in, ik las)

How to build it: had/was + past participle

  • Step 1: Choose the correct auxiliary in the past: had or was.
  • Step 2: Add the voltooid deelwoord (past participle) at the end of the clause.
Type Auxiliary Example (Dutch) Meaning
Most verbs had/ hadden Ik had al gestudeerd. I had already studied.
Change of state / movement (common ones) was/ waren De arts was al weggegaan. The doctor had already left.
Passive was/ waren Ik was toegelaten tot de opleiding. I had been admitted to the program.

Choosing had or was: what to pay attention to

The past perfect uses the same auxiliary choice as the perfect tense (hebben/zijn).

  • had (from hebben) is the default for most verbs: studeren, verzamelen, inschrijven (usually).
  • was (from zijn) is common with:
    • movement: gaan, komen, vertrekken
    • change of state: worden, sterven, groeien
    • passive constructions: toegelaten zijn, aangenomen zijn

Word order: where do the parts go?

Key point: the past participle goes to the end of the clause.

  • Main clause: subject + had/was + (rest) + participle
    • Ik had alle documenten al verzameld.
  • After a subclause starter (e.g. toen, omdat, voordat): the conjugated verb comes after the subject.
    • Toen ik het formulier inleverde, had ik alles al verzameld.
  • Subclause with omdat/voordat/toen: the conjugated verb goes to the end, and the participle goes even further to the end.
    • ... omdat ik alles al had verzameld.

How to decide quickly: a 10-second self-check

  1. Do I mention two past events? (often with toen, voordat, nadat, al)
  2. Which one happened first?
  3. Put the first event in had/was + participle.
  4. Put the second event in the normal past tense.
Signal What it suggests Example
al (already) Something was completed earlier Ik had het al geregeld toen hij belde.
voordat (before) One action clearly earlier We hadden met de decaan gesproken voordat we kozen.
pas toen (only when) Discovery happens later Ik was toegelaten, maar ik wist het pas toen ik de e-mail las.

The “unreal past”: had + modal verb (regret / it didn’t happen)

Use the past perfect with a modal to talk about something that should/could/would have happened in the past, but didn’t (often regret or criticism).

Structure Example (Dutch) Meaning
had + modal + infinitive Je had meer moeten studeren. You should have studied more.
had + modal + infinitive Ik had die e-mail gisteren kunnen sturen, maar ik deed het niet. I could have sent that email yesterday, but I didn’t.

Common mistake: forgetting the modal or using present perfect.

  • Je hebt meer moeten studeren. (wrong meaning here)
  • Je had meer moeten studeren. (regret/criticism about the past)

Common pitfalls (and how to avoid them)

  • Pitfall: using past perfect when there is only one past event.
    • Usually: Ik leverde het formulier in. (simple past is enough)
    • Past perfect only if you add an earlier past: ... omdat ik alles al had verzameld.
  • Pitfall: mixing up was (auxiliary) with was (being).
    • Ik was toegelaten. = passive (I had been admitted)
    • Ik was moe. = state (I was tired)
  • Pitfall: participle not at the end.
    • Ik had verzameld al alle documenten.
    • Ik had alle documenten al verzameld.

What you should be able to do after this

  • Tell a story in the past and make the order clear: earlier vs later.
  • Choose correctly between had and was (same logic as hebben/zijn).
  • Place the past participle correctly: at the end of the clause.
  • Use had + modal to express regret or criticism about the past.
  1. Form: past tense of the auxiliary verb had/was + voltooid deelwoord.
  2. The past in the past: If you describe two actions in the past, and one action happened earlier than the other, you use the past perfect for the action that happened longest ago, and the simple past for the other action.
Persoon (Person)Studeren (To study)Toelaten (To admit)
ikhad gestudeerd (had studied)was toegelaten tot (had been admitted to)
jijhad gestudeerd (had studied)was toegelaten tot (had been admitted to)
hij/zij/hethad gestudeerd (had studied)was toegelaten tot (had been admitted to)
wijhadden gestudeerd (had studied)waren toegelaten tot (had been admitted to)
julliehadden gestudeerd (had studied)waren toegelaten tot (had been admitted to)
zijhadden gestudeerd (had studied)waren toegelaten tot (had been admitted to)

Exceptions!

  1. An unreal past (not reality): The past perfect can also be combined with modal verbs such as moeten, kunnen, willen and mogen to describe an action that did not happen in the past or that one regrets.
