Had + kunnen / moeten / willen

had + kunnen / moeten / willen

Gebruik van had moeten + kunnen / moeten / willen om een oordeel of ongerealiseerde wens te evalueren, bijvoorbeeld in terugblik of alternatieve scenario's.

(Use of had moeten + kunnen / moeten / willen to evaluate a judgment or an unrealized wish, for example when looking back or in alternative scenarios.)

Meaning: looking back at something that didn’t happen

These forms are for the past + “missed opportunity / regret”.

  • had + moeten + infinitive = it was necessary, but it didn’t happen ("should have").
  • had + kunnen + infinitive = it was possible, but you didn’t do it ("could have").
  • had + willen + infinitive = you intended to, but it didn’t happen ("had wanted to / would have liked to").
What you mean Dutch pattern Good English equivalent
Obligation that wasn’t done had + moeten + infinitive should have + past participle
Option that wasn’t used had + kunnen + infinitive could have + past participle
Intention that wasn’t realised had + willen + infinitive had wanted to / would have liked to

How to build the sentence (and why there is no “ge-”)

Think: had/hadden + modal + main verb.

  • Use had (ik/jij/hij/zij/het) and hadden (wij/jullie/zij).
  • The modal stays in the infinitive: moeten / kunnen / willen (not: moest, kon, wilde).
  • The main action is also an infinitive: bellen, meten, versturen.

Key point: you do not use a past participle here (no gebeld, gemeten), because the modal + infinitive structure takes over.

Correct Common mistake
Ik had de huisarts moeten bellen. Ik had de huisarts moeten gebeld.
We hadden de ladekast eerst moeten meten. We hadden de ladekast eerst moesten meten.

Word order: where do the verbs go?

In a main clause, Dutch puts had/hadden in position 2. The other verbs go to the end.

Type Example (correct)
Main clause Ik had dat nachtkastje nog moeten afstoffen.
With time/place info We hadden het tapijt gisteren beter kunnen vervangen.
With a subclause Ik baal, omdat ik je nog had willen spreken.

Tip: treat moeten/kunnen/willen + infinitive as a “verb block” that wants to sit at the end.

Choosing the right modal: a quick decision guide

  1. Was it required (duty/standard/process)? → had moeten
  2. Was it an option (there was time/money/possibility)? → had kunnen
  3. Was it your plan (intention), but something prevented it? → had willen
Situation Natural Dutch
You missed a deadline Ik had de e-mail op tijd moeten versturen.
You had time to improve something We hadden nog een tweede offerte kunnen aanvragen.
You planned to call, but didn’t Ik had je nog willen terugbellen.

Self-check: does your sentence sound right?

  • Do you have had/hadden (not heb/hebben)?
  • Are moeten/kunnen/willen in the infinitive?
  • Is the main verb also an infinitive (e.g. meten, verplaatsen, afstoffen)?
  • Are the last two verbs together at the end: moeten/kunnnen/willen + infinitive?

If you can tick all four, you’ve got the structure.

  1. Had + moeten + infinitive = something had to happen, but it didn’t happen.
  2. Had + kunnen + infinitive = something was possible, but it wasn’t done.
  3. Had + willen + infinitive = there was an intention, but it didn’t happen.
