Had + kunnen / moeten / willen

had + kunnen / moeten / willen

Gebruik van had moeten + kunnen / moeten / willen om een oordeel of ongerealiseerde wens te evalueren, bijvoorbeeld in terugblik of alternatieve scenario's.

(Use of had moeten + kunnen / moeten / willen to evaluate a judgment or unrealized wish, for example when looking back or in alternative scenarios.)

What you express with had + moeten / kunnen / willen + infinitive

Use this structure to look back on a past situation and say: it didn’t happen.

  • had + moeten + infinitive = it was necessary / the right thing, but it wasn’t done (often regret or criticism).
  • had + kunnen + infinitive = it was possible, but it wasn’t done (missed opportunity).
  • had + willen + infinitive = there was an intention or wish, but it didn’t happen.

English shortcut: “should have / could have / would have liked to”.

How to build the sentence (step by step)

  1. Start with had / hadden (past tense of hebben).
  2. Add the modal: moeten / kunnen / willen (keep it as an infinitive).
  3. End with the main verb as an infinitive.
Meaning Formula Example
necessary, but not done had/hadden + moeten + infinitive Ik had de e-mail moeten sturen.
possible, but not done had/hadden + kunnen + infinitive We hadden eerder kunnen beginnen.
intended, but not done had/hadden + willen + infinitive Ik had je nog willen bellen.

Word order: where do the verbs go?

  • Main clause: the verb(s) go to the end. Usually you get a “verb cluster”.
  • Most common order: … had/hadden + modal + infinitive

Example (main clause): Ik had het nachtkastje nog moeten afstoffen.

Example with time first: Gisteren had ik het nachtkastje nog moeten afstoffen.

With a subordinate clause: … omdat ik het nachtkastje nog had moeten afstoffen.

Common mistake: don’t use a past participle

In English you say “should have done”. In Dutch, after had/hadden you keep the verbs as infinitives.

Correct Wrong Why
Ik had het tapijt kunnen vervangen. Ik had het tapijt gekund vervangen. kunnen stays an infinitive in this structure.
Ik had je nog willen spreken. Ik had je nog gewild spreken. willen stays an infinitive.
Ze had het nachtkastje moeten afstoffen. Ze had het nachtkastje gemoeten afstoffen. moeten stays an infinitive.

Choosing between moeten, kunnen, willen (quick self-check)

  • Was it required / responsible?moeten

Ik had me beter moeten voorbereiden.

  • Was it an option / opportunity?kunnen

We hadden de kast kunnen verplaatsen.

  • Was it your plan or intention?willen

Ik had je nog willen mailen.

Negation and nuance

  • Not done (neutral): Ik had het rapport moeten afmaken, maar ik had geen tijd.
  • Stronger regret: Ik had het rapport echt moeten afmaken.
  • Negative action: Ik had dat niet moeten zeggen. (I shouldn’t have said that.)
  • Not possible: Ik had dat niet kunnen weten. (I couldn’t have known.)

Mini checklist before you speak

  1. Am I looking back at the past? → use had/hadden.
  2. Did it not happen? → this structure fits.
  3. Pick the modal: moeten (required) / kunnen (possible) / willen (intended).
  4. Keep both verbs as infinitives at the end.
  1. Had + moeten + infinitive = something had to happen, but it didn’t happen.
  2. Had + kunnen + infinitive = something was possible, but it wasn’t done.
  3. Had + willen + infinitive = there was an intention, but it didn’t happen.
