Demonstrative pronouns: hetzelfde / dezelfde

Hetzelfde en dezelfde geven een overeenkomst aan met iets bekends.

(Hetzelfde and dezelfde indicate a similarity with something familiar.)

When do you use hetzelfde and dezelfde?

  • hetzelfde = with het-words or when it means unchanged / identical (often without a noun).
  • dezelfde = with de-words and with plural nouns.

English tip: both usually translate as the same. In Dutch you must choose the form that matches the noun (or the “unchanged” meaning).

Step-by-step choice: a quick self-check

  1. Is there a noun right after the word?
    • Yes → go to step 2.
    • No → it often means unchanged/identical → usually hetzelfde.
      De echo ziet er hetzelfde uit als vorige keer.
  2. Is the noun plural?
    • Yes → dezelfde.
      We gebruiken dezelfde afspraken als vorig kwartaal.
    • No → go to step 3.
  3. Is it a de-word or a het-word?
    • de-word → dezelfde.
      Ik heb dezelfde laptop als jij.
    • het-word → hetzelfde.
      Het is hetzelfde beleid als vorig jaar.

Two patterns you will see all the time

Pattern Meaning Correct example
dezelfde/hetzelfde + noun same one (same person/thing) U krijgt dezelfde kraamverzorgende als gisteren.
looks/seems/stays + hetzelfde unchanged / identical situation Mijn advies is hetzelfde gebleven.

Common mistake (and how to fix it)

  • Plural = always dezelfde
    • hetzelfde klachten → dezelfde klachten
    • hetzelfde afspraken → dezelfde afspraken
  • “It stayed the same” (no noun) = usually hetzelfde
    • Mijn advies is dezelfde gebleven. → Mijn advies is hetzelfde gebleven.

Meaning choice: “the same one” vs “the same (unchanged)”

Sometimes both are possible, but the meaning changes.

Mini checklist before you answer

  • Do I see a plural noun? → dezelfde.
  • Do I see a clear de-word? → dezelfde.
  • Do I see a clear het-word? → hetzelfde.
  • No noun, and it means unchanged / identical? → hetzelfde.
  1. Use hetzelfde for het-words and as an adverb meaning the same, unchanged, or earlier.
  2. Use dezelfde for de-words and plural forms.

Exceptions!

  1. In some cases, both dezelfde and hetzelfde can be used, depending on the meaning: use dezelfde for de-words or plural forms, and hetzelfde for equality or being unchanged.
