Demonstrative pronouns: hetzelfde / dezelfde

The core idea: “same” has two Dutch forms

English has only the same. Dutch chooses the form based on the noun:

• hetzelfde = with het-words or as an adverb meaning “unchanged / identical”
• dezelfde = with de-words and plural nouns

Step 1: Are you using a noun? Then match de/het (or plural)

If same is directly in front of a noun, pick the form that matches that noun.

Step 2: No noun after it? Then it’s often an adverb → hetzelfde

When you mean “unchanged / identical as before” (not “the same thing”), Dutch often uses hetzelfde.

• De werkwijze is in beide gevallen hetzelfde. (= unchanged / identical)

• Het beleid is hetzelfde gebleven. (= remained unchanged)

Tip: if you can replace it with unchanged, you probably need hetzelfde.

1. Is there a noun right after it?

   • Yes → choose by the noun: dezelfde (de/plural) or hetzelfde (het).

   • No → do you mean “unchanged/identical”? → usually hetzelfde.

2. If you’re unsure: look at the article you would normally use.

   • de huisarts → dezelfde huisarts

   • het nummer → hetzelfde nummer

   • de vitamines → dezelfde vitamines
