When to use lubić and when to use podobać się

  • lubić ≈ “to like (in general)”
    • Stable preferences, things you know well.
    • Food, hobbies, people, films, places, activities.
    • Examples:
      • Lubię kawę. – I like coffee.
      • Nie lubię zimy. – I don’t like winter.
      • Lubię tego aktora. – I like this actor.
  • podobać się ≈ “to appeal / to be attractive (to me) right now”
    • First impression, appearance, design, sound.
    • Something looks / sounds / feels nice at the moment.
    • Examples:
      • Podoba mi się ten kolor. – I like this colour (it looks good).
      • Nie podoba mi się ta reklama. – I don’t like this ad.
      • Podoba mi się Maciek Musiał. – I find him attractive / appealing.

Quick test:

  • Can you say in English: “I like doing it, it’s my habit / preference”? → use lubić.
  • Is it about “It looks/sounds nice to me now”? → use podoba mi się.

Word order and cases – one clear picture

How to build correct sentences – step by step

  1. Choose meaning:

    • General preference → lubię / nie lubię.
    • Impression / visual appeal → podoba mi się / nie podoba mi się.

  2. Put “nie” in the right place:

    • nie goes directly before the verb:
      • nie lubię, nie podoba mi się.
    • Do not write: lubie nie kawę, podoba mi nie się.

  3. Adjust the noun after the verb:

    • After lubię → accusative:
      • Lubię ten film.
      • Lubię tę kawę.
    • After nie lubię → genitive:
      • Nie lubię tego filmu.
      • Nie lubię tej kawy.

Using verbs after lubić

  • After lubić you can put a verb in the infinitive:
    • Lubię czytać. – I like to read.
    • Lubię pracować z domu. – I like working from home.
    • Nie lubię pisać maili. – I don’t like writing emails.
  • With podobać się you normally don’t use an infinitive:
    • Use nouns / “things”: Podoba mi się ten projekt. – I like this project.
    • Avoid: Podoba mi się pracować.

Mini self‑check: can you do this?

  1. Choose the verb

    • Talking about your favourite food in general → should you use lubić or podobać się?
    • Reacting to a colleague’s new car colour you see for the first time → which verb is more natural?

  2. Transform the sentence

    • Change: Lubię ten kolor. → say the same with podobać się.
    • Change: Ten aktor mi się nie podoba. → say the same with nie lubić.

  3. Check your endings

    • Positive: do you have Accusative after lubię?
    • Negative: do you have Genitive after nie lubię?
    • With (nie) podoba mi się: is the “liked” thing in Nominative?

If you can do these three steps without stopping to think too long, you have control of this topic and are ready to use it actively in conversation.

  1. We use "lubić" when we talk about things we know and like, to express our preferences.
  2. "Podobać się" refers to something more fleeting, based on appearance, a short-term effect or impression.
  3. To express negation, we use „nie” before the verb: nie lubię, nie podoba mi się .
