Two ways to say “I like” in Polish (and why they look different)

Polish uses two common patterns:

• lubić = “to like” (your preference, usually more stable)
• podobać się = “to be pleasing / to appeal to someone” (often first impression, look, vibe)

The key difference is who is the “subject” of the sentence.

Meaning + structure: who does what?

• lubię: I am doing the liking → you “take” the object.
• podoba mi się: X is doing the pleasing → X is the grammatical subject.

Case checkpoint: what changes after each verb?

Most common learner surprise: with nie lubię, the case often changes. With nie podoba mi się, it usually does not.

How to build “podoba mi się” correctly (step by step)

1. Start with: Podoba mi się…
2. Add the thing/person in nominative (basic dictionary form): ten film, ta kawa, Maciek
3. Keep the order flexible, but for A1 use one safe pattern:
   • Podoba mi się + X

Common mistake (case): Podoba mi się tej kawy. ✅ Podoba mi się ta kawa.

Negation: where “nie” goes (and what else changes)

• Put nie directly before the verb:

• Nie lubię…
• Nie podoba mi się…

Only lubić forces a typical case shift in the noun:

• lubię + kogo? co? → kawę
• nie lubię + kogo? czego? → kawy

Extra: after “lubić” you can also use a verb

With lubić, you can say what you like doing:

• Lubię pracować w ciszy. (I like to work in silence.)
• Nie lubię wstawać wcześnie. (I don’t like to get up early.)

podoba mi się is usually used with a noun/person/thing (what “appeals” to you).

Self-check: choose the right pattern fast

• If you mean a general preference / something you know → start with lubię.
• If you mean impression / looks / “it appeals to me” → start with podoba mi się.
• If your sentence has nie lubię → remember: genitive often appears (kogo? czego?).
• If your sentence has (nie) podoba mi się → keep the noun in nominative (kto? co?).
