What is happening here? “Nie” often changes the case

In Polish, some verbs and structures take Accusative in a positive sentence, but switch to Genitive in a negative sentence with nie.

Positive: normal object (often Accusative)
Negative with nie: object often becomes Genitive (answering kogo? czego? = “of whom/what?”)

The key pattern (A1): Mam/Jest/Lubię/Chcę… vs Nie mam/Nie ma/Nie lubię/Nie chcę…

Self-check: if you add nie and the noun ending changes, you are seeing Genitive in negation.

How to form the Genitive (singular) in this lesson

Use the noun’s gender to choose the most common genitive ending.

Noun type	Genitive ending (most common)	Examples from the table
Masculine	-a or -u	komputer → komputera; samochód → samochodu
Feminine (often ends in -a)	-y or -i	pralka → pralki; kawa → kawy

Masculine: when do I use -a vs -u?

-a: very often for people and animals (and many concrete objects too).
-u: very often for other things (especially more “non-living / abstract / substance-like” words), but many everyday objects also take -u.

At A1, learn it like vocabulary: noun + its genitive.

ten komputer → nie mam komputera
ten samochód → nie chcę samochodu

Tip: if you are unsure, check a dictionary entry or your course word list; masculine genitive is not 100% predictable.

Feminine: -y vs -i (the “k/g rule”)

Usually use -y: kawa → kawy
After k or g, use -i: pralka → pralki

Quick self-check: does the stem end in k/g? If yes → choose -i, not -y.

Neuter: the easy one

Most neuter nouns take -a in the genitive singular:

auto → nie mam auta
