How Polish dates are built (the core pattern)

Polish dates = day number + month in the genitive (dopełniacz).

12 sierpnia = 12th of August
5 lipca = 5th of July
3 kwietnia = 3rd of April

Think of it as: “the 12th of August”. Polish does not use a separate word for “of” here; the month ending shows it.

What changes: the month (genitive forms you actually need)

The day number stays the same. The month name changes form.

Common mistake: using the “dictionary month” in a date

In a Polish date, the month is not in its basic form.

~~12 sierpień~~ → 12 sierpnia
~~5 lipiec~~ → 5 lipca
~~24 grudzień~~ → 24 grudnia

Adding the year: two natural options

You will see both. Both are correct.

12 sierpnia 2023 (common in writing)
12 sierpnia 2023 roku (a bit more formal; also common)

Tip: If you add roku, it stays exactly like this: 2025 roku, 2023 roku.

Adding the day of the week: punctuation and word order

When you include the weekday, Polish often uses a comma:

Poniedziałek, 3 kwietnia
Czwartek, 12 lipca

In speech and informal writing, you may also hear/see w + weekday:

w poniedziałek, 3 kwietnia (on Monday, April 3rd)

Asking and answering: “What day is it today?”

Jaki jest dziś dzień? (What day/date is it today?)
Jest czwartek, 12 lipca.

Notice: Polish typically says It is Thursday + 12 July (weekday first).

Self-check: can you build a correct Polish date?

Write the day number: 5, 12, 24…
Pick the month and switch to the genitive: lipiec → lipca
(Optional) Add the year: 2025 or 2025 roku
(Optional) Add weekday + comma: Poniedziałek, 3 kwietnia

Quick test: If you can say it in English with “of” (5th of July), you need the genitive month in Polish: 5 lipca.

In Polish, dates are written by combining an ordinal number for the day with the month name in the genitive case: jedenasty sierpnia.
