The superlative degree of the adjective: dobry → lepszy → najlepszy

Comparative vs. superlative: what the table is showing

In this unit you meet Polish comparatives ("-er") and superlatives ("the -est").

  • Stopień wyższy = comparative: tańszy (cheaper), droższy (more expensive), lepszy (better), gorszy (worse)
  • Stopień najwyższy = superlative: add naj-: najtańszy, najdroższy, najlepszy, najgorszy

How to build the superlative (the key rule)

The superlative is usually very simple:

  • comparative + naj- → superlative

tańszy najtańszy cheaper → the cheapest
droższy najdroższy more expensive → the most expensive
lepszy najlepszy better → the best
gorszy najgorszy worse → the worst

Watch the spelling: it’s one word in Polish: najtańszy, not naj tańszy.

Choosing the right form in a sentence: “more” vs. “most”

  • Use the comparative when you compare two things.
    • Ten bilet jest tańszy niż tamten. = This ticket is cheaper than that one.
  • Use the superlative when you choose the #1 in a group / in a situation.
    • Ten bilet jest najtańszy. = This ticket is the cheapest.

If your head says “than”, you normally need the comparative (niż often appears).

If your head says “the most / the best / the worst”, you need naj-.

Agreement: the adjective must match the noun (common A1 mistake)

In Polish, adjectives change to match the noun’s gender (and later also case). The naj- part stays, but the ending changes.

bilet masculine najtańszy Ten bilet jest najtańszy.
miejsce neuter najgorsze To miejsce jest najgorsze.
  • Quick self-check: underline the noun (e.g., woda) → pick the matching ending on the adjective.
  • Typical error: Ta woda jest najtańszy. → correct: najtańsza.

Two useful patterns you will use in conversation

  1. “X jest naj-…” (choosing the best option)

    • Dla mnie ta opcja jest najlepsza. = For me, this option is the best.
    • W tym sklepie chleb jest najtańszy. = In this shop, the bread is the cheapest.

  2. “Jestem najbardziej …” (with adverbs like “most”)

    • Po pracy jestem najbardziej zmęczony. = After work I’m the most tired.

Note: naj- is for adjectives (najtańszy, najlepszy). najbardziej often works like “the most” with longer descriptions (and is very common in everyday speech).

Mini checklist: what to pay attention to

  • Need “the -est”? Add naj-.
  • Write it together: najlepszy, not naj lepszy.
  • Match the noun: najtańszy / najtańsza / najtańsze.
  • Two items = comparative (often with niż), best in a set = superlative.
