Think of the frame as:

In conversation, these “I” forms are your safest default for expressing preferences.

Typical mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t translate “than” as od here. Use niż with woleć comparisons.
    Correct: Wolę pub niż klub.
  • Keep the second part parallel (thing vs thing, activity vs activity):
    Good: Wolę kino niż teatr.
    Good: Wolę zostać w domu niż wyjść na imprezę.
  • Infinitive after the verb (not an English “-ing” form):
    Polish: Nienawidzę tańczyć. (not a separate “-ing” form)
