"Woleć", "uwielbiać" i "nienawidzić" to czasowniki i wyrażenia używane do opisywania swoich preferencji.

Uwielbiać / nienawidzić / woleć: what you are really saying

Uwielbiać = to love / to really like

Nienawidzić = to hate / to really dislike

Woleć = to prefer (always compares two options)

  • Uwielbiam muzykę. = I love music.
  • Nienawidzę imprez. = I hate parties.
  • Wolę kino niż teatr. = I prefer the cinema to the theatre.

Step 1: choose the correct verb form (A1, “I …”)

Infinitive “I …” (ja) Pronunciation hint

woleć wolę -ę ending

Tip: In Polish you often skip ja. Wolę already means “I prefer”.

Step 2: decide what comes after the verb

  • Thing (a noun): Uwielbiam muzykę. / Nienawidzę imprez.
  • Activity: use the infinitive (dictionary form)
    • Uwielbiam imprezować. (to party)
    • Nienawidzę tańczyć. (to dance)

Self-check: If you can add “to …” in English, Polish usually uses the infinitive: to dance → tańczyć.

How to compare: woleć … niż …

To compare two things/activities, use:

Wolę X niż Y.

Wolę zostać w domu niż wyjść na imprezę.

Wolę pracować w biurze niż pracować zdalnie.

Common pitfalls (and quick fixes)

  • Don’t forget the second option with woleć (it’s a comparison).
    • Wolę kino. (sounds incomplete in many contexts)
    • Wolę kino niż teatr.
  • Use infinitive after “love/hate”.
    • Uwielbiam tańczę.
    • Uwielbiam tańczyć.
  • niż is “than” (comparison). It is not the same as bo (“because”).

Mini checklist before you speak

  1. Do I want to say love, hate, or prefer?
  2. If it’s prefer: do I have X + niż + Y?
  3. If it’s an action: did I use the infinitive (tańczyć, iść, zostać)?
