What this grammar is: future for imperfective verbs

In Polish, imperfective verbs (ongoing/repeated actions: “work, wait, watch”) do not have a simple one-word future like English “I will work”.

You build the future with być (to be) in the future + your verb.

Two correct patterns (same meaning)

Key point: both patterns talk about the future with imperfective verbs. Choose one and stay consistent.

Step 1: choose the right “być” form

Pick the future form of być first:

Step 2A: Pattern A (recommended): “będę + infinitive”

This is the easiest and most reliable pattern at A1.

Formula: będę + pracować / czekać / oglądać / słuchać
The main verb stays in the dictionary form (infinitive).

Now	Future (Pattern A)
Dzisiaj pracuję.	Jutro będę pracować.
Teraz czekasz.	Za chwilę będziesz czekać.

Step 2B: Pattern B: “będę + past form” (watch the endings)

Here the second part looks like the past tense, so it changes for gender (singular) and group type (plural).

Masculine (he / male speaker): pracował, czekał, oglądał
Feminine (she / female speaker): pracowała, czekała, oglądała
Neuter (ono): pracowało (less common in real-life “I”, but appears with “it”)
Plural:
- oni (mixed group or all men): pracowali
- one (all women / non-masculine group): pracowały

Example (same meaning as Pattern A):

Jutro będę pracował (male speaker) / będę pracowała (female speaker).
W sobotę będziemy oglądali (mixed/all men) / będziemy oglądały (all women).

What to avoid (common A1 mistakes)

Do not mix future “być” with present verb forms:
~~będę pracuję~~ → będę pracować
Do not use the infinitive after Pattern B endings (choose one pattern):
~~będę pracował pracować~~ → będę pracował or będę pracować
With Pattern B, match the ending to the speaker/group:
~~Maria: będę pracował~~ → Maria: będę pracowała

Special note: verbs like “móc” and “chcieć”

Some high-frequency verbs form the future in a fixed way with będę + their past form (Pattern B style).

Będę mógł / mogła jutro przyjść. (I’ll be able to come tomorrow.)

Pick Pattern A or B.
Pattern A: add the infinitive.
Pattern B: add the correct past ending (ł/ła/ło/li/ły).

Goal for conversation practice: default to będę + infinitive until Pattern B feels automatic.

There are two ways to form the future tense for imperfective verbs in Polish.
The first way is the verb „być” in the future tense + the infinitive, e.g. będę czekać.
The second way, used more often in Polish, is the future tense of „być” + the verb in the past tense in the 3rd person (singular or plural).

There are also verbs, e.g. „chcieć” and „móc”, which form the future tense only by adding their past form to the verb „być”.
