Time prepositions in Polish: the basic idea

These prepositions tell you when something happens: a day, an hour, a start, an end, a duration, or “before/after”.

at (a time)	o	at 10:00
in (after a period)	za	in an hour
since / from (start point)	od	since morning
until / to (end point)	do	until 5
for / during (duration)	przez	for the whole week
before	przed	before sleep
after	po	after lunch

Choose the preposition: 3 quick questions

Is it a day/date/part of the week? → use w

W poniedziałek mam spotkania.
Is it a clock time? → use o

O 10:00 mam spotkanie.
Are you talking about a time range or a relation in time?
- od = start (“since/from”) → Od rana
- do = end (“until/to”) → Do piątej
- przez = duration (“for/during”) → Przez cały tydzień
- przed / po = before/after → Przed snem, Po obiedzie
- za = “in …” (after a period) → Za godzinę

w vs o: the most common confusion

w answers: Which day / which period?

W poniedziałek pracuję w biurze.
o answers: What exact time?

O 10:00 mam spotkanie.
Don’t mix them:

~~O poniedziałek~~ → W poniedziałek

~~W 10:00~~ → O 10:00

od … do … : talk about a time window

Use this pair when you want a clear start and end.

Pattern	Example (natural, adult context)
od + start … do + end	Pracuję od 9:00 do 17:00.
od + moment (no end stated)	Jestem w biurze od rana.

Tip: If you only say the end time, you usually need just do: Pracuję do piątej.

przez vs za: duration vs “in (after)”

przez = how long something lasts (duration)

Przez cały weekend jestem w domu.
za = when something will happen (after a period)

Za godzinę mam egzamin. (The exam starts in one hour.)
Compare:

Za godzinę zaczynam pracę. (start time)

Przez godzinę pracuję. (duration)

przed vs po: anchor to an event

Use these when you position one action relative to another action/event.

przed + event = before → Przed spotkaniem piję kawę.
po + event = after → Po spotkaniu piszę e-mail.

Good to know: in Polish you often use a noun/event: po obiedzie, przed snem.
