This lesson explains how to express age in Polish using the verb mieć and the noun rok in its forms: rok (1), lata (numbers ending in 2, 3, 4, except 12–14), and lat (other numbers). Example: Mam 1 rok, Mam 3 lata, Mam 5 lat.
  1. The form of the noun depends on the plural ending.
  2. The word rok only appears on its own and means one year.
  3. Numbers ending in 2, 3, 4 (except 12–14) are combined with the form lata.
  4. Numbers ending in 12–14 as well as all other numbers take the form lat.

Forms Used When Expressing Age in Polish

This lesson explains how to correctly express age in Polish using the verb mieć (to have) combined with the noun rok in its appropriate form. The forms change depending on the number specified and are essential for speaking naturally about age.

Understanding the Different Forms of "Rok" for Age

  • rok - used only for the number 1 (one year). For example: Mam 1 rok.
  • lata - used with numbers ending in 2, 3, or 4, except for the numbers 12 to 14. For example: Mam 2 lata, Mam 24 lata, Mam 52 lata.
  • lat - used with all other numbers including those ending with 12, 13, and 14. For example: Mam 5 lat, Mam 11 lat, Mam 14 lat, Mam 21 lat, Mam 60 lat.

Key Points to Remember

  • The noun form depends on the ending digit(s) of the number
  • The word rok only means "one year" and does not require the number "one" to be said explicitly
  • Numbers 12, 13, and 14 are exceptions where despite ending in 2, 3, or 4, the form lat is used

Differences from English

In English, expressing age typically uses the verb to be, for example, "I am 25 years old," whereas in Polish we use mieć (to have), as in Mam 25 lat (literally, "I have 25 years"). Additionally, Polish uses distinct noun forms (rok, lata, lat) depending on the number, which is more complex than the English singular/plural "year/years." Understanding these forms and their correct usage is essential for clear and natural Polish communication.

Useful Vocabulary and Expressions

  • mieć – to have
  • rok – year (singular)
  • lata – years (used with numbers ending with 2, 3, or 4 except 12-14)
  • lat – years (used with all other numbers)
  • Ile masz lat? – How old are you?
  • Mam rok/lata/lat. – I am (one/two-to-four/many) years old.
