Learn how to form the Spanish gerund for -ar, -er, and -ir verbs, including irregular forms like "yendo" and "leyendo." Practice with key verbs such as crear (creando), esperar (esperando), and vivir (viviendo).
  1. Verbs ending in -ar form the gerund with the stem + "-ando", as in trabajar -> trabajando.
  2. Verbs ending in -er/-ir form the gerund with the stem + "-iendo", as in cumplir -> cumpliendo.
  3. It can also have an imperfective value, that is, it can be used to describe something in the past.

Exercise 2: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence that properly uses the gerund in each sentence. Observe common mistakes and learn to avoid them.

1.
Error: incorrect ending of the gerund in -ar; it must be '-ando', not '-anda'.
Error: the verb 'trabajo' is in present tense, it is not gerund; 'trabajando' must be used.
2.
Error: the form 'vivieno' is incorrect; the correct ending of the gerund for -ir is '-iendo'.
Error: 'vivido' is past participle, not gerund; 'viviendo' must be used.
3.
Spelling error in the formation of the gerund of the verb leer; the correct form is 'leyendo', not 'leiendo'.
Error: after 'we are' a gerund must be used, not an infinitive; that's why 'leyendo' is correct.
4.
Error: after 'estar' the gerund must be used and not the infinitive, that's why 'yendo' is correct.
Error: 'ido' is past participle, not gerund; the correct gerund is 'yendo'.

Understanding the Spanish Gerund: The Three Conjugations

This lesson focuses on the Spanish gerund, a verb form that expresses ongoing actions similar to the English '-ing' form. You'll learn how to form and use gerunds with verbs ending in -ar, -er, and -ir, including regular and irregular verbs.

What is the Gerund?

The gerund in Spanish is a non-personal verb form used to describe an action in progress. It is often used with the verb estar to indicate continuous actions, both in the present and past contexts.

How to Form the Gerund

  • Regular -ar verbs: Add -ando to the stem.
    Example: trabajar → trabajando
  • Regular -er and -ir verbs: Add -iendo to the stem.
    Example: vivir → viviendo

Irregular Gerunds

Some verbs have irregular gerund forms that differ from the regular patterns. Common examples include:

  • Decir → diciendo
  • Leer → leyendo
  • Ir → yendo
  • Oír → oyendo
  • Venir → viniendo
  • Dormir → durmiendo
  • Caber → cabiendo

Usage Notes

The gerund can describe actions currently happening or ongoing actions in the past, giving it an imperfective meaning. For example, "Estaban creando una familia con mucho amor." means "They were creating a family with much love."

Comparing Spanish and English Gerunds

Unlike English, where the '-ing' form can function as a noun (gerund noun), Spanish gerunds are exclusively verb forms that cannot act as nouns. Instead, Spanish uses infinitives for many such cases. Also, in Spanish, gerunds are not used to connect clauses as English present participles sometimes are.

Here are some useful Spanish phrases with their English equivalents:

  • Estoy trabajando en un proyecto importante. – "I am working on an important project."
  • Ellos están viviendo juntos. – "They are living together."
  • Estamos leyendo documentos para la reunión. – "We are reading documents for the meeting."

Summary

This lesson equips you to recognize and form the Spanish gerund across all three verb conjugations, including key irregular forms. Mastering these forms helps to express ongoing actions clearly and fluently.
