“Por qué”, “porque”"por qué" y "por que" significan lo mismo, pero se utilizan en contextos diferentes.

(“Por qué”, “porque”"por qué" y "por que" mean the same thing, but they are used in different contexts.)

The 10‑second decision: am I asking or explaining?

  • Asking “why?” 0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0→ use por que9 (two words, with accent).
  • Explaining “because” a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0→ use porque (one word, no accent).

Self-check: If you could replace it with English why, it’s por que9. If you could replace it with because, it’s porque.

Direct vs indirect questions (same spelling: por que9)

  • Direct question = has bf ? a0→ bfPor que9...?
  • Indirect question = no question marks, but still “why” a0→ por que9
Type Spanish English meaning
Direct bfPor que9 este1 cerrado el museo? Why is the museum closed?
Indirect No sabemos por que9 este1 cerrado el museo. We don’t know why the museum is closed.

Common pitfall: Don’t add bf ? inside an indirect question: No sabemos bfpor que9 este1 cerrado el museo.

Porque: answer word vs “because” clause (same spelling)

  • Short answer: Porque, + sentence.
  • Cause inside a longer sentence: ..., porque + reason.
Use Spanish English meaning
Answer bfPor que9 vamos en taxi? Porque el metro no funciona. Why are we taking a taxi? Because the metro isn’t running.
Cause Vamos en taxi porque el metro no funciona. We’re taking a taxi because the metro isn’t running.

Common pitfall: Don’t use porque to mean “why”: No entiendo porque hay tanta gente. a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0→ No entiendo por que9 hay tanta gente.

Porque9 (one word + accent): “the reason” (a noun)

Use porque9 when it behaves like a thing (= “the reason”). You can usually put el / un / este before it.

  • Queremos saber el porque9 de la cancelacif3n.
  • No entiendo el porque9 de esta norma.

Self-check: If you can say “the reason”, you need el porque9 (with el).

Por el/la que: “the reason why / the one that” (relative structure)

Use por + article + que when “why” links to a noun you mentioned (place, reason, decision, etc.).

  • Esta es la razf3n por la que no vamos al museo.
  • El barrio antiguo es el lugar por el que pasan todos los tours.

Quick agreement reminder:

  • por el que (masc. sing.)
  • por la que (fem. sing.)
  • por los que (masc. pl.)
  • por las que (fem. pl.)

Mini checklist before you answer

  1. Is it a question (direct or indirect)? a0→ por que9
  2. Is it an explanation (“because”)? a0a0a0a0a0a0a0→ porque
  3. Is it a noun (“the reason”)? a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0a0→ (el) porque9
  4. Does it follow a noun (“the reason why / the place that”)? a0→ por el/la que

What to pay attention to: the accent (por que9 / porque9), the space (two words vs one), and whether you’re asking vs giving a reason.

  1. “¿Por qué?” is used to ask a question (direct or indirect) and it has an accent mark.
  2. “Porque” is used to give the reason or to answer a question and it does not have an accent mark.
  3. “Porqué” is the reason; “por la que” explains the reason.

1.
Incorrect to use 'Porque' in a direct question; '¿Por qué?' with an accent and question marks should be used.
The initial question mark is missing to make it a properly written direct question.

The joined form 'porque' is used for answers or explanations, which is incorrect here in an indirect question.
