Estos pronombres ayudan a ver con quién se realiza la reflexibilidad y conectar las personas.

(These pronouns help to show with whom the reflexive action is done and to connect people.)

1. What are conmigo, contigo, consigo exactly?

  • They mean: with me, with you, with him / her / themself.
  • They are formed from con + a special pronoun.
  • Spanish “packs” them into one word.
Meaning Spanish Literally
with me conmigo con + mí
with you (tú) contigo con + ti
with him / her / themself consigo con + sí

Important: these forms only exist in singular. For plural you use the normal forms: con nosotros, con vosotros, con ellos.

2. The basic rule in one look

  • After most prepositions, Spanish does not use yo, tú, él….
  • It uses special forms: mí, ti, sí.
Subject After other prepositions With con
yo (para mí, de mí, sin mí) conmigo (not con mí)
ti (para ti, de ti, sin ti) contigo (not con ti)
él / ella / usted él / ella / usted or
(para ella, de él, para sí)
consigo (reflexive: with him/her/oneself)

3. When do you use conmigo, contigo, consigo?

  • conmigo → someone does something with me.
  • contigo → someone does something with you (informal, ).
  • consigo → someone has something with him / her / themself, often “carries with them”.
Spanish English meaning Comment
¿Vienes conmigo al pueblo? Are you coming with me to the village? Companion = me
Quiero ir contigo a la granja. I want to go with you to the farm. Companion = you (tú)
El agricultor lleva siempre agua consigo. The farmer always carries water with him. He carries it on himself

4. Typical mistakes (and quick corrections)

These are errors English speakers often make. Use them as a checklist.

  1. Using two words instead of one

    • con míconmigo
    • con ticontigo
    • con síconsigo
  2. Using the subject pronoun after con

    • con yoconmigo
    • con túcontigo
    • con él (reflexive sense) → consigo
  3. Using them in plural

    • conmigoscon nosotros
    • contigoscon vosotros / con ustedes
    • consigoscon ellos / con ellas

5. How is consigo different from “con él / con ella”?

Both are possible, but they do not mean the same.

Form Meaning Example
consigo with him/her/themself (reflexive) El guía lleva siempre una linterna consigo.
The guide always carries a torch with him.
con él / con ella with him / her (another person) Quiero ir al campo con él.
I want to go to the countryside with him.
  • Use consigo when the person and the owner are the same.
  • Use con él / con ella when the companion is a different person.

6. Don’t forget mí, ti, sí without con

These pronouns also appear after other prepositions, not only con.

Preposition Form Example
para mí, ti, él/ella, sí Este regalo es para mí.
de mí, ti, él/ella, sí Siempre habla de sí mismo.
sin mí, ti, él/ella, sí No puedo vivir sin ti.

Only con has the special contracted forms conmigo, contigo, consigo.

7. Step‑by‑step: choose the correct form

  1. Find the person

    • me → use conmigo
    • you (tú) → use contigo
    • him / her / themself → maybe consigo
  2. Check the idea

    • Companionship: “come with me / with you” → conmigo / contigo.
    • Carrying something “with him/herself” → consigo.
    • Talking about another person, not reflexive → con él / con ella.
  3. Check the number

    • Singular → conmigo, contigo, consigo.
    • Plural → con nosotros, con vosotros, con ellos.

8. Quick self‑check

Cover the right column and test yourself.

English idea Correct Spanish
Are you coming with me to the farm? ¿Vienes conmigo a la granja?
I want to go with you (tú) to the village. Quiero ir contigo al pueblo.
The farmer always has his phone with him. El agricultor siempre lleva el móvil consigo.
They never talk about themselves. Nunca hablan de sí mismos.
For me, life in the countryside is easy. Para , la vida en el campo es fácil.
  • If you chose con mí, con ti or a plural form like conmigos, go back to sections 2 and 4.
  • If your answers match the table, you are using these forms correctly.

9. What to pay attention to in real conversations

  • Listen for conmigo / contigo instead of con yo / con tú.
  • Notice consigo especially in texts: it is common in written Spanish.
  • When you speak, give yourself a second to think: “with meconmigo”.
  • Accept these three as fixed forms that you simply use, like English “with me” not “with I”.

If you can explain to yourself when to say conmigo, contigo, consigo instead of con mí, con ti, con él, you have mastered this topic.

  1. "Conmigo", "contigo" and "consigo" are used to express that an action is done with another person. They are formed by combining the preposition "con" with the pronouns "mí" (from yo), "ti" (from tú) and sí (él).
  2. The pronouns "mí", "sí" y "ti" are placed after prepositions.
