Eerst leg je de borden in het midden, ongeveer twee centimeter van de rand van de tafel. (First, place the plates in the center, about two centimetres from the edge of the table.)
Het bestek leg je van buiten naar binnen: de vorken links, de messen rechts met de scherpe kant naar het bord. (Arrange the cutlery from the outside in: forks on the left, knives on the right with the sharp edge facing the plate.)
De lepels leg je ook rechts. Je kunt het gewone mes vervangen door een vismes of een steakmes, als dat nodig is. (Put the spoons on the right as well. You can swap the regular knife for a fish knife or a steak knife if needed.)
Het dessertbestek leg je boven het bord: het vorkje met de steel naar links en het lepeltje met de steel naar rechts. (Place the dessert cutlery above the plate: the small fork with the handle to the left and the small spoon with the handle to the right.)
Het waterglas staat boven de messen. Het witte en het rode wijnglas staan erbij, samen in een driehoek. (The water glass goes above the knives. The white and red wine glasses sit beside it, forming a triangle.)
Links boven de vorken staat een klein bordje voor het brood, met een botermes op het bordje. (Above the forks on the left is a small bread plate with a butter knife on it.)
Het servet leg je op het bord in een servetring of netjes gevouwen naast de vorken. (Place the napkin on the plate in a napkin ring or neatly folded next to the forks.)
Serveer het aperitief of een glaasje bubbels rustig in de woonkamer of aan de bar, niet direct aan tafel. (Serve the aperitif or a glass of bubbly calmly in the living room or at the bar, not at the table itself.)
Als je kaas serveert, doe je dat vóór het zoete dessert. Het zoete dessert komt vóór de koffie. (If you serve cheese, do so before the sweet dessert. The sweet dessert is served before the coffee.)
