Note on Language Differences
Unlike English, Dutch often uses specific time adverbs within sentences to clarify when an action takes place without relying on auxiliary verbs. The present tense is used for both habitual actions and ongoing activities, so context is important.
Useful phrases include:
- Ik kijk nu – I am watching now (present progressive expressed by context)
- Wanneer luister jij? – When do you listen?
- Ik speel al drie jaar piano. – I have been playing piano for three years.
