Directional prepositions: what is the idea?

In this lesson you learn Dutch prepositions that show movement or a route:

  • door – through
  • naar – to
  • langs – along / past
  • om – around
  • over – over
  • tot – until / up to
  • van … naar … – from … to …

They answer questions like:

  • Where do you go? → naar
  • Which route do you take? → door, langs, om, over
  • From where to where? → van … naar …
  • Until where? → tot

1. ‘Naar’ – going to a place (destination)

Use naar when you go to a destination.

  • naar + city / country / building / person / event
Pattern Example (NL) Meaning
naar + stad/land Ik ga naar Amsterdam. I go to Amsterdam.
naar + gebouw We gaan naar de supermarkt. We go to the supermarket.
naar + persoon Ik ga naar mijn collega. I go to my colleague.

Typical mistakes

  • Ik ga in de stad. → Ik ga naar de stad.
  • Ik ga tot het station. (for destination) → Ik ga naar het station.

2. ‘Door’ – through something (inside)

Use door when you move inside a space or through it from one side to the other.

  • door + park, straat, tunnel, bos, gebouw …
Idea Example (NL) Meaning
inside / through Ik fiets door het park. I cycle through the park.
through a street De auto rijdt door de straat. The car drives through the street.
through a tunnel De trein gaat door de tunnel. The train goes through the tunnel.

Tip: You are in the thing while you move → use door.

Typical confusion: door vs langs

  • door: route is inside → Ik loop door het park.
  • langs: route is beside → Ik loop langs het park.

3. ‘Langs’ – along or past something (beside)

Use langs when you move beside something, not inside it.

  • langs + rivier, kanaal, park, weg, huis …
Idea Example (NL) Meaning
beside a canal We lopen langs de gracht. We walk along the canal.
beside a river Ik ren langs de rivier. I run along the river.
passing a house De bus rijdt langs mijn huis. The bus goes past my house.

Quick check:

  • Are you inside the place? → probably door.
  • Are you next to it, seeing it on your side? → probably langs.

4. ‘Om’ – around something (in a circle)

Use om when you move around an object in a circle or to avoid it.

  • om + gebouw, plein, kerk, blok … heen (often added)

om … heen We rijden om het gebouw heen. We drive around the building.
short form De auto rijdt om het plein. The car drives around the square.

Tip: think of drawing a circle around something → use om (often om … heen).

5. ‘Over’ – over or via something (bridge, road, water)

Use over when you move over the top of something or when the route is via a bridge, road or square.

  • over + brug, plein, weg, rivier, water …
Idea Example (NL) Meaning
over a bridge We lopen over de brug. We walk over the bridge.
over water De tram rijdt over het water. The tram goes over the water.
over a square Ik fiets over het plein naar huis. I cycle across the square to go home.

Contrast: over vs langs

  • over de brug – you go across the bridge.
  • langs de brug – you go beside the bridge, not on it.

6. ‘Tot’ – until / up to a point (end of the route)

Use tot when your route goes up to a clear end point.

  • tot + plek, hoek, einde, station, rotonde …
Idea Example (NL) Meaning
until the end We lopen tot het einde van de straat. We walk until the end of the street.
until the parking lot Je rijdt tot het parkeerterrein. You drive up to the parking lot.
until the station Neem de tram tot het station. Take the tram to the station (end point).

Important:

  • For a normal destination (“I go to the station”) → use naar.
  • Tot is common in instructions and timetables: focus on the end point.

7. ‘Van … naar …’ – from … to … (start and finish)

Use van … naar … when you say both start and end of the route.

  • van + plaats A + naar + plaats B

van … naar … Ik reis van Amsterdam naar Rotterdam. I travel from Amsterdam to Rotterdam.
home → work Ik ga van huis naar mijn werk. I go from home to my work.

Common error

  • Ik reis van Amsterdam tot Rotterdam. → sounds like a limit, not a route.
  • Use van Amsterdam naar Rotterdam for normal travel.

9. Step‑by‑step: how do I choose the right preposition?

  1. Step 1 – Do I talk about a destination?

    • Yes → use naar (or van … naar … if you also say the start).
    • No → go to step 2.

  2. Step 2 – Am I inside the place on my route?

    • Yes → use door (door het park / door de straat / door de tunnel).
    • No → go to step 3.

  3. Step 3 – Am I beside it, seeing it on my side?

    • Yes → use langs (langs de rivier / langs het park).
    • No → go to step 4.

  4. Step 4 – Do I go around it in a circle?

    • Yes → use om (… heen) (om het gebouw heen).
    • No → go to step 5.

  5. Step 5 – Do I cross over it?

    • Yes → use over (over de brug, over het plein).
    • No → go to step 6.

  6. Step 6 – Do I want to say “until there, then stop”?

    • Yes → use tot (tot het station, tot de hoek).

11. What should you pay special attention to?

  • naar vs tot
    • Everyday “going to somewhere” → naar.
    • End point in instructions → often tot.
  • door vs langs
    • Inside the place → door.
    • Next to the place → langs.
  • van … naar …
    • Always use van for the start and naar for the end.
    • Don’t mix with van … tot … for a normal route.
  • om … heen
    • heen is optional but common in speech.
    • It makes the idea of “around” very clear.

Use these patterns to prepare for conversation class. Replace the words in brackets.

  • Ik ga van [thuis] naar [mijn werk].
