In origine l’opera di Dante si chiamava solo “Commedia”. L’aggettivo “Divina” è stato aggiunto dopo come segno di grande ammirazione. (Originally Dante's work was called simply "Comedy." The adjective "Divine" was added later as a mark of great admiration.)
La Divina Commedia è un poema drammatico e allegorico: gli eventi hanno anche un significato simbolico più profondo. (The Divine Comedy is a dramatic, allegorical poem: the events also carry a deeper symbolic meaning.)
Si chiama “commedia” perché la storia comincia male, all’inferno, e finisce bene, in paradiso. (It's called a "comedy" because the story begins badly, in Hell, and ends well, in Paradise.)
Secondo gli antichi canoni esistevano tre stili: tragico, umile e comico. Nella Commedia Dante mescola temi, personaggi e linguaggi diversi. (According to ancient conventions there were three styles: tragic, humble, and comic. In the Comedy Dante blends different themes, characters, and registers.)
Dante è autore e anche protagonista: lui fa un viaggio nei tre regni dell’oltretomba, inferno, purgatorio e paradiso. (Dante is both author and protagonist: he makes a journey through the three realms of the afterlife — Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise.)
Il viaggio dura una settimana, dall’otto al quattordici aprile dell’anno milletrecento, e ha uno scopo preciso: liberarsi dai peccati e arrivare alla salvezza. (The journey lasts a week, from April 8th to April 14th in the year 1300, and has a clear purpose: to free himself from sin and attain salvation.)
Le guide di Dante sono Virgilio per inferno e purgatorio, poi Beatrice e San Bernardo per il paradiso. (Dante's guides are Virgil for Hell and Purgatory, and then Beatrice and Saint Bernard for Paradise.)
Il poema è diviso in tre parti, una per ogni regno, e racconta tutto il viaggio di Dante verso la salvezza. (The poem is divided into three parts, one for each realm, and tells the whole story of Dante's journey toward salvation.)
