(The negative imperative is used to forbid or prohibit an action.)

1. What is the negative imperative?

  • Use the negative imperative to tell someone NOT to do something.
  • In Italian, you use it mainly with tu (you, singular), noi (we) and voi (you, plural).

In English, you say:

  • Don’t speak.
  • Let’s not speak.
  • Don’t speak, everyone.

In Italian, the same ideas are:

  • Tu: Non parlare.
  • Noi: Non parliamo.
  • Voi: Non parlate.

2. The core rule in one glance

Key idea: only tu is special. It uses the infinitive, not the usual imperative ending.

3. Step 1 – Negative imperative with “tu”

For tu, the rule is always:

  • non + infinitive

Examples with three conjugations:

Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Non parli – this is present indicative, not negative imperative.

4. Step 2 – Negative imperative with “noi” and “voi”

For noi and voi you simply use:

  • non + normal imperative form

So if the affirmative imperative is:

  • Noi: Parliamo. (Let’s speak.)
  • Voi: Parlate. (Speak, everyone.)

Then the negative is:

  • Noi: Non parliamo. (Let’s not speak.)
  • Voi: Non parlate. (Don’t speak, everyone.)

7. Checklist: do you master this?

You can move on if you can honestly say “yes” to these questions:

  • For tu, I automatically use non + infinitive (for example, Non parlare, Non leggere).
  • For noi and voi, I just put non in front of the normal imperative form (for example, Non scriviamo, Non aprite).
  • I can avoid typical mistakes like non parli for a command to tu.
  • I can read a sentence in context (job interview, office, meeting) and choose the correct person: tu, noi, or voi.

If one point is still unclear, re-read the short rule for that person and invent 3 quick examples of your own.
