What the Italian present progressive really means (stare + gerundio)

Use it to describe an action in progress (happening around now).

Adesso / in questo momento / oggi / in questi giorni often trigger it.
It is close to English “I am doing”, but Italian also uses the simple present a lot.

Formula: stare + gerundio → Sto facendo, stiamo vivendo, sta morendo.

Gerundio endings: choose the right “-ando / -endo”

Self-check: if the infinitive ends in -are, you will almost always see -ando.
If it ends in -ere / -ire, you will almost always see -endo.

The most common mistakes (and how to fix them)

Mistake 1: using the infinitive after stare

~~Sto fare un piano.~~ → Sto facendo un piano.
Mistake 2: wrong ending

~~Stiamo vivando~~ → Stiamo vivendo
Mistake 3: guessing irregular forms

~~Sto dicando~~ → Sto dicendo

~~Sto facando~~ → Sto facendo

Reflexive verbs: where the “si/mi/ti/ci/vi” goes

With reflexive verbs, the reflexive pronoun goes before stare.

Self-check: ask “who?” → noi = ci, loro = si.

When to choose present progressive vs simple present

Choose stare + gerundio when you want to highlight “in progress / ongoing”.

In questo periodo stiamo vivendo insieme da poco. (ongoing situation)
Choose the simple present for habits, routines, facts, schedules.

Di solito vivo vicino all’ufficio. (habit)

Do I mean “right now / currently”? If yes → use stare + gerundio.

Exceptions!

I verbi riflessivi aggiungono "si" prima di "stare".
Esempio: "sposarsi" -> "si stanno sposando"
