Machiavelli è un gioco di carte molto popolare in Italia. È un gioco che richiede ingegno, strategia, capacità di “ribaltare” la situazione.
Machiavelli is a very popular card game in Italy. It is a game that requires cleverness, strategy, and the ability to “turn” the situation around.

Per giocare a Machiavelli servono due mazzi di carte francesi e da due a sei giocatori. (To play Machiavelli, you need two decks of French-suited cards and two to six players.)
Il mazziere dà tredici carte a ogni giocatore e lo scopo del gioco è finire per primi tutte le carte. (The dealer deals thirteen cards to each player, and the aim of the game is to be the first to get rid of all your cards.)
Il mazzo coperto, detto "tallone", viene messo al centro e inizia il giocatore alla sinistra del mazziere. (The face-down deck, called the “stock”, is placed in the center, and the player to the dealer’s left starts.)
Nel proprio turno si può pescare una carta e passare, oppure "calare" una o più combinazioni valide. (On your turn, you can draw a card and pass, or “lay down” one or more valid combinations.)
Le combinazioni sono: tris con semi diversi, scale dello stesso seme e aggiunte di carte alle combinazioni. (The combinations are: three of a kind with different suits, runs in the same suit, and adding cards to existing combinations.)
Nella maggior parte dei casi, per poter giocare la prima mano i giocatori devono avere almeno un tris. (In most cases, to be able to play your first hand, players must have at least one three of a kind.)
Tutti i giocatori possono modificare le combinazioni per crearne di nuove valide. (All players can modify the combinations to create new valid ones.)
Possono anche scomporre e ricomporre le combinazioni a piacere: i tris possono diventare sequenze. (They can also break down and reassemble the combinations as they like: three of a kind can become sequences.)
Durante le modifiche bisogna lasciare combinazioni valide, giocare almeno una carta e non prendere carte dal tavolo. (During these changes, you must leave only valid combinations, play at least one card, and not take cards from the table.)
Vince il giocatore che finisce per primo tutte le carte; se il "tallone" finisce, si continua finché qualcuno chiude. (The first player to get rid of all their cards wins; if the “stock” runs out, play continues until someone goes out.)

1. Davide: Stasera voglio invitare qualche amico a cena a casa. (Tonight I want to invite some friends over for dinner at home.)
2. Federica: Ottima idea! Che ne dici di fare una serata di giochi dopo cena? (Great idea! How about having a game night after dinner?)
3. Davide: Perfetto! Pensavo di preparare una pasta e poi giocare a un gioco di carte, tipo Machiavelli. (Perfect! I was thinking of making some pasta and then playing a card game, like Machiavelli.)
4. Federica: C'è un mio collega che viene dall'estero: lo possiamo invitare? (I have a colleague who comes from abroad: can we invite him?)
5. Davide: Certamente, è il benvenuto! Conosce le regole del gioco? (Of course, he’s welcome! Does he know the rules of the game?)
6. Federica: No. Mi aiuti a ripassare le regole? Non le ricordo bene. (No. Can you help me review the rules? I don’t remember them well.)
7. Davide: Certo. Ognuno riceve 13 carte: l'obiettivo è rimanere senza carte. (Sure. Everyone receives 13 cards: the goal is to end up with no cards.)
8. Federica: Quando è il tuo turno, puoi pescare una carta o mettere una carta sul tavolo. (When it’s your turn, you can draw a card or put a card on the table.)
9. Davide: Esatto, ma solo se ci sono già delle carte sul tavolo. Altrimenti devi aprire il gioco con almeno tre carte. (Exactly, but only if there are already cards on the table. Otherwise you have to open the game with at least three cards.)
10. Federica: E queste carte possono essere tre numeri di semi diversi o una sequenza di numeri dello stesso seme. (And these cards can be three numbers of different suits or a sequence of numbers of the same suit.)
