The present conditional

What is the Italian present conditional?

• The condizionale presente talks about something that is not certain, but possible.
  • a wish: “I would like…”
  • a polite request: “Could you…?”
  • a possibility or consequence: “It would cost…”
• In English, you often see it as would + verb.
• In Italian, it is one verb form with special endings.

How do I form the present conditional?

The book already gives you the endings: -rei, -resti, -rebbe, -remmo, -reste, -rebbero.

Now connect the endings with each conjugation.

• For -are and -ere verbs the endings are the same.
  • io -rei
  • tu -resti
  • lui / lei -rebbe
  • noi -remmo
  • voi -reste
  • loro -rebbero
• Many -ire verbs add -isc- in the present, but not here:
  • preferire → io preferirei (not preferireiscerei)

Spelling changes: -care, -gare, -ciare, -giare

These changes are only about spelling and sound, not about meaning.

• Verbs in -care, -gare: add h to keep the hard sound [k]/[g].
  • cercare → io cercherei
  • pagare → io pagherei
• Verbs in -ciare, -giare: drop the written i before the ending.
  • cominciare → io comincerei (not comincierei)
  • mangiare → io mangerei (not mangierei)

Quick check:

• If the infinitive ends in -care / -gare → add h.
• If it ends in -ciare / -giare → remove i.

When do I use the present conditional?

At A2 you mainly need three uses.

1. Wishes and preferences
   • Preferirei un appartamento luminoso. – I would prefer a bright apartment.
   • Rinnoverei la cucina. – I would renovate the kitchen.
2. Polite requests and offers
   • Potrei vedere il contratto? – Could I see the contract?
   • Mi direbbe il prezzo totale? – Would you tell me the total price?
   • Mi spiegherebbe le spese di servizio? – Would you explain the service charges?
3. Possibilities / consequences (without “if”)
   • Questo appartamento costerebbe troppo per noi. – This flat would cost too much for us.
   • Con un balcone, l’appartamento varrebbe di più. – With a balcony, the apartment would be worth more.

Type 1 conditional: real condition (Se + present + future)

Do not confuse the Italian future with the conditional.

• Structure (real, possible situation):
  • Se + present indicative, future simple

• After se in this real type, use present, not conditional:
  • Se avrei più soldi, rinnoverei la cucina.
  • Se ho più soldi, rinnoverò la cucina.

Unreal / hypothetical: se + congiuntivo imperfetto + condizionale

You also see the conditional in a common hypothetical structure.

• Structure (unreal or unlikely):
  • Se + imperfect subjunctive, present conditional

• Do not use two conditionals in the same sentence:
  • Se avrei più soldi, rinnoverei la cucina. ✗
  • Se avessi più soldi, rinnoverei la cucina. ✓

Common confusions to avoid

• Future vs conditional
  • pagherò = I will pay (future, certain plan)
  • pagherei = I would pay (conditional, depends on a condition)
• After “se” in real conditions
  • Use present, not conditional and not future.
  • Se trovi un appartamento vicino alla metro, pagherai meno.
• Politeness
  • In Italian, the conditional makes a request softer and more polite:
  • Mi dice il prezzo? → direct.
  • Mi direbbe il prezzo? → more polite.

Step‑by‑step: can you form it?

1. Take the infinitive.
   • rinnovare, chiedere, spiegare, cominciare…
2. Check the ending:
   • -are / -ere → same endings.
   • -ire → usually just add endings (no -isc- at A2 for this tense).
3. Apply spelling rules:
   • -care / -gare → add h (pagare → pagherei).
   • -ciare / -giare → drop i (mangiare → mangerei).
4. Add the correct person ending:

Step‑by‑step: can you choose the right structure?

Look at the situation, then choose.

1. You are polite / not sure → use present conditional.
   • Mi invierebbe il contratto per email?
   • Vorrei vedere un altro appartamento.
2. You talk about a real future result → use Type 1: se + present + future.
   • Se firmi oggi, entrerai in casa il prossimo mese.
3. You imagine an unreal situation now → use se + congiuntivo imperfetto + condizionale.
   • Se avessi più tempo, cercherei un appartamento con giardino.

Mini self‑test (just think the answer):

• Polite question to an agent: “Could you show me the balcony?” → Mi mostrerebbe il balcone?
• Real future: “If you buy this flat, you will pay less transport.” → Se compri questo appartamento, pagherai meno il trasporto.
• Unreal wish: “If the rent were lower, we would stay here.” → Se l’affitto fosse più basso, rimarremmo qui.
