What the Italian present conditional does (condizionale presente)

Use it to sound polite, to make requests, or to talk about what you would do in a situation.

Polite request: Le chiederei alcuni dati. = “I would ask you for some details.”
Preference / suggestion: Preferirei un appartamento arredato. = “I’d prefer …”
Not a firm plan: Rinnoveremmo il contratto, ma … = “We would renew …, but …”

Think: future-in-the-past / hypothetical / “if possible”. It often matches English “would”.

How to build it (quick formula)

Infinitive + -rei, -resti, -rebbe, -remmo, -reste, -rebbero

Pronunciation & spelling: the 2 common “gotchas”

Verbs ending in -care / -gare add h to keep the hard sound (k/g).

cercare → cercherei (not ~~cercarei~~)
spiegare → spiegherei (not ~~spiegarei~~)
Verbs ending in -ciare / -giare drop the i (it would be redundant).

cominciare → comincerei (not ~~comincierei~~)
mangiare → mangerei (not ~~mangierei~~)

When to choose conditional vs future (decision check)

Decision: Rinnoveremo il contratto domani. = “We will renew it tomorrow.”
Negotiation: Rinnoveremmo il contratto, ma l’affitto è alto. = “We would renew it, but …”

"Se" (if) + which tense? Avoid this typical mistake

In a real/possible condition, Italian normally uses:

se + present → future

Correct: Se firmi il contratto, ti trasferirai presto.
Not here: ~~Se firmi il contratto, ti trasferiresti presto.~~

Self-check: Is the “if” situation realistic and about the future? If yes, use future in the result.

Ready-to-use professional phrases (natural, polite)

Le chiederei qualche informazione in più. = “I would ask you for a bit more information.”
Preferirei fissare una videochiamata. = “I’d prefer to schedule a video call.”
Paghereste anche le spese di servizio? = “Would you also pay the service charges?”
Rinnoveremmo il contratto per un altro anno, ma vorremmo rinegoziare l’importo. = “We’d renew for another year, but we’d like to renegotiate the amount.”

2-step self-check before you speak

Meaning check: Am I being polite / hypothetical? If yes → condizionale.
Form check: Do I have one of these endings? -rei, -resti, -rebbe, -remmo, -reste, -rebbero

Spelling check: -care/-gare → add h; -ciare/-giare → drop i.

It is formed with the infinitive + -rei, -resti, -rebbe, -remmo, -reste, -rebbero.

Exceptions!

Verbs ending in -care, -gare add an -h between the stem and the ending. Example: cercare -> cercherei; spiegare -> spiegherei.
Verbs ending in -ciare, -giare drop the -i between the stem and the ending. Example: cominciare -> comincerei; mangiare -> mangerei.
