I pronomi oggetto diretto sostituiscono nomi già citati.

(Direct object pronouns replace nouns that have already been mentioned.)

What are direct object pronouns?

In Italian you often replace an object (the thing or person that receives the action) with a short pronoun.

These are the direct object pronouns you see in the table:

  • mi = me
  • ti = you (singular)
  • lo = him / it (masculine, singular)
  • la = her / it (feminine, singular)
  • ci = us
  • vi = you (plural)
  • li = them (masculine, plural)
  • le = them (feminine, plural)

They answer the question “who / what do I see, take, change, call…?”

Step 1 – Find the direct object

First, identify the direct object in the sentence.

  1. Find the verb.
  2. Ask: “Who / what + verb?”
  3. That word or group is the direct object.

Example:

  • Il receptionist vede me.
Verb: vede → Who does he see? → me → direct object → replace with miIl receptionist mi vede.
  • Prendo la chiave.
Verb: prendo → What do I take? → la chiave → direct object → replace with laLa prendo.

Step 2 – Where do I put the pronoun?

In normal sentences with a conjugated verb, the rule is very stable:

  • The pronoun comes immediately before the verb.
Full sentence With pronoun
Il receptionist vede me. Il receptionist mi vede.
Risolviamo il problema. Lo risolviamo.
Il receptionist aiuta noi. Il receptionist ci aiuta.

Incorrect position examples:

  • Il receptionist vede mi.
  • Risolviamo lo il problema.

Step 3 – lo / la become l’

When lo or la come before a verb that starts with a vowel, they usually shorten to l’.

Without pronoun With pronoun
Prendo il passaporto. Lo prendo.
Offro la colazione. L’offro.
Invito la cliente. L’invito.

Visual check:

  • If verb starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) → use l’.
  • If verb starts with a consonant → use lo or la.

Step 4 – With the infinitive (devo riportare, posso vedere…)

This is the main special case in your unit.

Structure with modal verbs (dovere, potere, volere) + infinitive:

  • devo riportare (I must return)
  • posso vedere (I can see)
  • voglio prendere (I want to take)

Here, Italian normally prefers:

  • verb (conjugated) + infinitive+pronoun

Examples:

  • Devo riportare la chiave.
    Devo riportarla.
  • Posso vedere la camera?
    Posso vederla?
  • Voglio prendere i documenti.
    Voglio prenderli.

Compare with incorrect patterns:

  • Devo la riportare.
  • Posso la vedere?

At A2, use this simple rule:

  • With dovere, potere, volere + infinitive: attach the pronoun to the infinitive.

Direct vs indirect: what is (and is not) in this table

The table in your book shows forms that are used as direct pronouns.

But in some examples you also see indirect pronouns (like Le, Gli, ti as “to you”).

For this page, focus on this simple distinction:

  • Direct: answers who / what? (lo, la, li, le, mi, ti, ci, vi)
  • Indirect: answers to whom / for whom? (mi, ti, gli, le, ci, vi, loro)

Examples from the context of a hotel:

  • Porto il passaporto alla receptionist.
→ Direct object: il passaportoLo porto alla reception.
  • Porto il passaporto alla receptionist.
→ Indirect object: alla receptionistLe porto il passaporto.

At this level, be clear in your head:

  • Practice here is mainly on direct objects (things, people directly affected).

Typical mistakes to avoid

  • Putting the pronoun after the verb
Il receptionist aspetta mi.Il receptionist mi aspetta.
  • Keeping the full noun and the pronoun
Il receptionist la vede la camera.Il receptionist la vede.
  • Using the wrong gender / number
la chiave (feminine, singular) → la
il problema (masculine, singular) → lo
i documenti (masculine, plural) → li
le carte (feminine, plural) → le
  • Forgetting l’ before vowels
    Lo invito Anna.L’invito.

Mini checklist before you speak

When you form a sentence with a pronoun, quickly check:

  1. Do I really need a pronoun?
Am I repeating a noun I already mentioned? If yes, use a pronoun.
  2. Which pronoun?
    Is the noun masculine/feminine? Singular/plural? Person/thing?
  3. Position
Normal verb: pronoun before the verb.
Modal + infinitive: pronoun attached to infinitive (riportarla).
  4. Vowel or consonant?
If you use lo / la before a vowel → change to l’.

Self-test: can you do this now?

Try these in your head before looking back at the rules:

  1. “The receptionist sees the guests. He sees them now.”
→ Identify the direct object, choose the pronoun, put it in the correct position.
  2. “I must return the card.” → say it with a pronoun attached to the infinitive.
  3. “The room is noisy. Can you change it?” → choose the correct gender and position.

If you can solve these three quickly and confidently, you are ready to use direct object pronouns in conversation.

  1. The object pronoun comes before the verb.
  2. The pronouns lo, la become l' in front of a vowel.
Pronome oggetto (Object pronoun)Esempio (Example)
Mi (Me)Il receptionist vede meIl receptionist mi vede
Ti (You)Il receptionist chiama teIl receptionist ti chiama
Lo (Him / it – masculine)Risolviamo il problemaLo risolviamo
La (Her / it – feminine)Prendo la chiave alla receptionLa prendo alla reception
Ci (Us)Il receptionist aiuta noiIl receptionist ci aiuta
Vi (You – plural)Il receptionist aspetta voiIl receptionist vi aspetta
Li/le (Them – masculine / feminine)Ora vedo loroLi vedo ora

Exceptions!

  1. With the verb in the infinitive, the pronoun is attached to the end of the verb. Example: "io devo riportare la chiave in reception" -> "devo riportarla in reception".

Exercise 1: Multiple choice

Instruction: Choose the correct answer

1. Signor Bianchi, la camera è pronta. Vuole veder___ prima o preparo subito i documenti?

Mr. Bianchi, the room is ready. Would you like to see___ first or should I prepare the documents right away?)

2. Mi scusi, la chiave non funziona: può cambiar___, per favore?

Excuse me, the key doesn't work. Could you change___, please?)

3. Gentile signora, il problema del rumore è stato risolto: domani ___ controlliamo ancora.

Dear madam, the noise problem has been resolved. Tomorrow ___ we'll check it again.)

4. Devo riportare la chiave alla reception; posso riportar___ domani mattina presto?

I need to return the key to reception; can I bring back___ early tomorrow morning?)

Exercise 2: Multiple Choice

Instruction: Choose the correct sentence that properly uses direct or indirect object pronouns according to the explained rules.

1.
The position of the pronoun 'me' is incorrect and the pronoun 'lo' is unnecessary in this sentence.
The direct object pronoun must be placed before the verb, so 'me' cannot come after 'waits'.
2.
With the infinitive, the pronoun attaches to the end of the verb, not before the main verb.
The position of the pronoun is wrong; with the infinitive, the pronoun attaches to the end of the verb.

Exercise 3: Rewrite the phrases

Instruction: Rewrite the sentences by replacing the direct object with the correct direct object pronoun (mi, ti, lo, la, ci, vi, li, le).
