The real conditional (type 2)

Usiamo il periodo ipotetico della realtà per parlare di azioni possibili nel futuro.

(We use the real conditional to talk about possible actions in the future.)

What you are building: a real (possible) condition

Use this pattern when the condition is realistic and the result is in the future.

  • Condition = something you can really do (today / tomorrow / next week)
  • Consequence = what will happen after that

The core formula (Italian logic)

Part Italian tense Meaning in English
Se + condition Presente “If you do…” (present form)
Consequence Futuro semplice “...you will do…”

Key point: Italian often uses the present after se, even when English might say “if you will…”.

Model sentences (clean and reusable)

  • Se firmi il contratto oggi, ti trasferirai il mese prossimo.
  • Se rinnoviamo la cucina, l’appartamento sarà più costoso.
  • Se fai la visita con l’agenzia immobiliare, ti mostreranno più opzioni.

What to pay attention to (typical mistakes)

  • 1) Don’t use the future after “se”.

    Se firmerai il contratto, ti trasferirai presto. ❌

    Se firmi il contratto, ti trasferirai presto. ✅

  • 2) Don’t use the conditional in the consequence for real situations.

    Se firmi il contratto, ti trasferiresti presto. ❌

    Se firmi il contratto, ti trasferirai presto. ✅

  • 3) Make sure the consequence is clearly future.

    Se paghi la caparra, il proprietario tiene l’appartamento per te. ❌

    Se paghi la caparra, il proprietario terrà l’appartamento per te. ✅

Word order: where to put “se” and commas

  • Most common: condition first, then consequence (often with a comma)

    Se mi mandi i documenti oggi, ti richiamerò nel pomeriggio.

  • Also possible: consequence first, then condition (comma usually optional)

    Ti richiamerò nel pomeriggio se mi mandi i documenti oggi.

Quick self-check (before you speak or write)

  1. Is the situation real/possible (not imaginary)?

  2. After se, did I use presente?

  3. In the consequence, did I use futuro semplice?

  4. Does the sentence still make sense if I add: “then” between the two parts?
