Adjective declension with definite articles (der grüne, das leckere, ...)

Get your book

Attributive adjectives in German take different endings depending on the case and the article. For example: 'der grüne Salat' in the nominative and 'des grünen Salats' in the genitive.

What you’re practicing here: adjective endings after “der/die/das”

With the definite article (der / die / das / den / dem / des), the article already shows a lot of grammar information.

So the adjective ending is usually “weaker” and follows a simple pattern:

  • Mostly -e (easy form)
  • Often -en (the “default” in many other cases)

The 10‑second rule (most useful for conversation)

  • Nominative: adjective → -e

    der grüne Salat

  • Accusative:
    • masculine (den …): adjective → -en

      Ich esse den grünen Salat.

    • feminine / neuter (die / das …): adjective → -e

      Ich kaufe die frische Suppe.

      Ich esse das leckere Essen.

  • Dative: adjective → -en

    mit dem grünen Salat

  • Genitive: adjective → -en

    die Farbe des grünen Salats

One visual map: when do I use -e vs -en?

Case Article signal Adjective ending Mini example
Nominative der / die / das -e der neue Termin
Accusative den (masc.) -en den freien Platz
Accusative die / das -e das wichtige Dokument
Dative dem / der -en mit dem günstigen Ticket
Genitive des / der -en wegen des kritischen Fehlers

How to choose the case quickly (so you can pick the ending)

  1. Find the article (der/die/das/den/dem/des).

  2. Link article → case:

    • den = usually accusative masculine
    • dem = dative masculine/neuter
    • des = genitive masculine/neuter
    • der can be nominative masculine, dative feminine, or genitive feminine/plural → use the sentence function or preposition to decide
  3. Apply the ending rule from the table: -e or -en.

The most common mistake (and how to self-correct)

  • Trap: using -e after den.

    Ich kaufe den frische Salat.

Correct: Ich kaufe den frischen Salat.

  • Self-check question: “Do I see den?” → if yes, almost always -en on the adjective.

Mini checklist before you answer

  • der/die/das in nominative → adjective -e
  • den (accusative masculine) → adjective -en
  • dem / des → adjective -en
  • Accusative feminine/neuter (die/das) → adjective -e

If you can spot the article quickly, you can produce the correct adjective ending quickly.

  1. Nominative: all genders: -e.
  2. Dative/Genitive: all genders: -en.
  3. Accusative (masculine): -en, neuter/feminine: -e.

1.
Incorrect: in the accusative masculine after “den”, the adjective must have -en: the correct form would be “den frischen Salat”.
2.
Incorrect: in the accusative neuter after “das”, the ending is -e, not -en: the correct form is “das proteinreiche Frühstück”.
