Genitiv mit innerhalb, außerhalb (Zeit, Ort)

Die Präpositionen innerhalb und außerhalb stehen oft mit Genitiv, z.B. innerhalb der Woche, außerhalb der Stadt.

(The prepositions innerhalb and außerhalb are often used with the genitive, e.g. innerhalb der Woche, außerhalb der Stadt.)

What innerhalb and auerhalb mean (and what they dont)

innerhalb = within / inside a limit (time or place)

auerhalb = outside a limit (time or place)

  • They describe a boundary: a week, a city, Europe, office hours, a deadline.
  • They are not about movement into or out of a place.
    • Movement uses: in, aus, nach, zu, etc.

The core pattern: usually Genitive

After innerhalb and auerhalb, German usually uses the Genitive.

Pattern Typical use Example
innerhalb + Genitiv time / place limit Wir melden uns innerhalb der Woche.
auerhalb + Genitiv place limit Das Hotel liegt auerhalb der Stadt.
  • Common mistake: using accusative like a direction.
    • Wir gehen auerhalb die Stadt joggen.   Wir gehen auerhalb der Stadt joggen.

When von appears: innerhalb/auerhalb von + Dative

You will often see von when the noun has no article (especially names of places or bare time expressions).

Use case Recommended form Example
No article / proper name auerhalb von + Dativ Er arbeitet auerhalb von Europa.
Bare time amount innerhalb von + Dativ Wir antworten innerhalb von einer Stunde.
  • Both forms can be correct, but this is a useful learner rule:
    • With article  usually Genitive: innerhalb der Woche, auerhalb der Stadt
    • Without article  often von + Dative: auerhalb von Deutschland, innerhalb von 24 Stunden

Quick case check: what changes in the noun phrase?

You usually only need to change the article (and sometimes the noun ending).

Meaning check: time vs. place (choose the most natural phrasing)

  • Time limit (deadline window):
    • Wir melden uns innerhalb der nchsten zwei Tage.
    • Bitte senden Sie die Unterlagen innerhalb von 48 Stunden.
  • Place limit (outside/inside an area):
    • Der Parkplatz liegt auerhalb des Gelndes.
    • Auerhalb von Berlin ist es oft ruhiger.

Self-check before you answer (10 seconds)

  1. Am I expressing a boundary (within/outside), not a direction?
  2. Do I have an article?
    • Yes  use Genitive (innerhalb der / auerhalb der, innerhalb des).
    • No  prefer von + Dative (innerhalb von, auerhalb von).
  3. If masculine/neuter singular: did I use des (often with -s/-es)?
    • innerhalb des Projekts, auerhalb des Vertrags
