Exercise 2: Use the website or the reading text

Instruction: You are planning a vacation and would like to know at work how many vacation days you are entitled to and what consequences unplanned absence has.

Task: Schreiben Sie eine kurze E-Mail (80–100 Wörter) an Ihre Führungskraft: Beantragen Sie Urlaub, nennen Sie die Mindestzahl an Urlaubstagen und begründen Sie, warum man ohne Genehmigung nicht einfach frei nimmt.

(Write a short email (80–100 words) to your supervisor: Apply for vacation, state the minimum number of vacation days, and explain why you cannot simply take time off without approval.)

URL: Urlaub beantragen auf der Arbeit

In Deutschland hat jede Arbeitnehmerin und jeder Arbeitnehmer einen gesetzlichen Urlaubsanspruch. Während des Urlaubs wird das Arbeitsentgelt weitergezahlt. Das Gesetz legt eine Mindestanzahl fest: Bei einer Sechs-Tage-Woche sind mindestens 24 Werktage pro Jahr vorgeschrieben. In vielen Arbeitsverträgen stehen mehr Tage, etwa durch eine Vertragsklausel.

Wichtig ist: Urlaub muss beantragt und genehmigt werden. Erst nach der Genehmigung darf man frei nehmen. Wer ohne Zustimmung des Arbeitgebers Urlaub nimmt, riskiert eine Abmahnung oder sogar eine Kündigung. Deshalb sollte man rechtzeitig planen und den Urlaub schriftlich anfragen.

Es gibt keinen gesetzlichen „Menstruationsurlaub“. Bei starken Beschwerden kann man sich aber krankschreiben lassen und ein ärztliches Attest vorlegen.
